Sts Act4

The document outlines the pros and cons of gene therapy, highlighting its potential to prevent and cure inherited disorders while also noting risks such as cancer and allergic reactions. It discusses the author's views on the approval of gene therapy in the Philippines and the government's role in funding research on genetic modifications for unborn babies, expressing opposition to such funding. Overall, the document emphasizes the need for careful consideration of the ethical and health implications of gene therapy.

PROS AND CONS

Direction: Complete the table below regarding the effects of gene therapy to health and to
society.

PROS CONS

Human health -maybe used to prevent, -potential risks could

treat, or cure certain include certain types of
inherited disorders such cancer
as cystic fibrosis, alpha-1
-allergic reactions
antitrypsin deficiency,
hemophilia, beta -or damage to organs or
thalassemia, and sickle tissues if an injection in
disease. involved
-provides options. Gene
therapy can potentially
cure someone of a
disease, especially in
instances where no other
medications have worked.
-gene therapy has the
potential to get rid of a
person’s symptoms for life.

Society -it brings hope -it’s costly

-it’s an effective treatment -the results aren’t
method guaranteed
-the therapy effects are -it might encourage gene
timeless and long-lasting doping
-Gene therapy is -religious concerns may
technology based arise
-Gene therapy isn’t limited -its potentially dangerous
to humans
1. What do you think about gene therapy?
-Gene therapy is a way of introducing new genes in existing cells that prevents or cures many
diseases. For example, suppose a brain tumor is forming by rapidly dividing cancer cells. The
reason this tumor is forming is due to some defective or mutated gene. Gene therapy is a
medical approach that treats or prevents disease by correcting the underlying genetic problem.
2. Do you think the Food and Drug Administration should or should not approve gene therapy
treatments for use in the Philippines?
-Gene therapy is under study to determine whether it could be used to treat diseases. Current
research is evaluating; future studies will test whether it is an effective treatment option. Several
studies have already shown that this approach can have very serious health risks, such as
toxicity, inflammation, and cancer. Although gene therapy techniques are relatively new, some
risks may be unexpected; however, healthcare professionals, research institutions, and
regulatory authorities work to make it as secure as possible.
Comprehensive federal laws, regulations, and guidelines help protect people who participate in
research studies (called clinical trials). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated
all gene therapy products in the U.S. and oversees research in this area. The FDA shall first
authorize researchers who wish to conduct clinical trials with this approach. Clinical trials in
which participants are believed to be at risk may be rejected or suspended by the FDA.
3. Do you think the government should or should not fund scientific research on changing the
genes of unborn babies that aim to improve their characteristics such as intelligence or physical
traits such as athletic ability or appearance?
-From my own perspective, I think that the government should not fund any scientific research
with regard to changing the genes of unborn babies just to aim and improve their characteristics
such as intelligence or physical traits such as athletic ability or appearance. If ever there’s a
given chance that certain genes are manipulated that must not supposed to? We are just
always giving science the chance to always manipulate having knowledge than we actually
have.
