Understanding Computer Viruses

What is a Computer Virus?

A computer virus is a harmful program that can spread from one device to
another. Just like a biological virus, it attaches itself to files or programs and
can cause damage, steal information, or slow down systems.

Common Computer Viruses and Their Effects

1. ILOVEYOU Virus

 Spread through email as a "love letter" attachment.

 Deleted files and sent itself to all contacts.

2. WannaCry Ransomware

 Locked computers and demanded a ransom payment.

 Affected hospitals, businesses, and individuals worldwide.

3. Melissa Virus

 Spread through Microsoft Word documents in emails.

 Sent itself to the first 50 contacts in an email list, slowing down

systems.

4. Trojan Horse Virus

 Appears as a normal file but secretly installs malware.

 Can steal passwords, delete files, or allow hackers to control a

computer.

5. Conficker

 Spread through networks and USB drives.

 Disabled security updates and created a backdoor for hackers.

6. Stuxnet

 A highly advanced virus used for cyber warfare.

 Specifically targeted industrial systems, like nuclear plants.

7. Mydoom
 One of the fastest-spreading email viruses ever.

 Slowed down the internet and launched attacks on websites.

8. Zeus Trojan

 Stole banking information by logging keystrokes.

 Targeted online banking users to steal money.

9. CryptoLocker

 A ransomware virus that encrypted files.

 Forced victims to pay money (ransom) to unlock their files.

10. Sasser

 Spread without needing user interaction.

 Caused computers to restart repeatedly, making them unusable.

11. Michelangelo Virus

 Activated on March 6 (Michelangelo’s birthday).

 Erased data from infected computers on that day.

12. Code Red

 Targeted Microsoft servers.

 Defaced websites and spread rapidly online.

How to Protect Your Computer from Viruses

✅ Use antivirus software – Regularly update and scan for threats.

✅ Be cautious with emails – Avoid opening attachments from unknown
sources.
✅ Keep your computer updated – Install security patches and updates.
✅ Avoid downloading from unknown websites – Stick to trusted sources.
✅ Back up your data – Keep important files safe in case of infection.

Conclusion

Computer viruses can cause serious damage, but with the right precautions,
you can stay safe. Always be careful online and keep your system protected!
