COMPARATIVES
IN ENGLISH
Teacher David´s English Class
In English, comparatives
are divided into three
main types
Comparatives of
Superiority 🔼
They are used to indicate that something is more
than something else.
Structure
Short adjectives (one syllable or some two-syllable adjectives
ending in -y):
Adjective + "-er" + than
My car is faster than yours.
This book is thicker than that one.
She is happier than before.
Spelling rules:
If the adjective ends in -y, change the y to i before adding "-
er" (happy → happier).
If it ends in consonant-vowel-consonant, double the last
consonant (big → bigger).
Long adjectives (two or more syllables, except
those ending in -y):
More + adjective + than
This movie is more interesting than the last one.
The test was more difficult than I expected.
Irregular adjectives (do not follow regular rules):
Good → better (This pizza is better than the other one.)
Bad → worse (Today’s weather is worse than yesterday’s.)
Far → farther/further (My house is farther than yours.)
Example 1
My laptop is cheaper than yours
She speaks louder than me
Examples Example 2
This lesson is easier than the prevous one
Last month was hotter than this one
She looks sadder now
Example 3
Their show is more entertaining than before
The students are more motivated
Comparatives of
Inferiority 🔽
They are used to indicate that something is less than
something else.
Structure
Less + adjective + than
This book is less interesting than the other
one.
She is less tired than yesterday.
🔹 Note: You do not use "-er" with comparatives of
inferiority.
Example 1
She looks less cute without make up.
The movie is less exciting than the book
Examples Example 2
She felt less energetic after the long hike
The small town is less crowded than the city.
This task is less complicated than I initially thought.
3. Comparatives
of Equality ➡️
They are used to say that two things are
equal or similar in a certain aspect.
Structure
As + adjective + as
This exam is as easy as the previous
one.
My house is as big as yours.
🚨 Negation: You can use "not as... as" to say
that something is not as... as something else:
This test is not as difficult as the last
one.
Example 1
I can run as fast as a dog
Other languages are not as important as English
Examples Example 2
Drinking alcohol is as bad as smoking
If you practice hard, you will be as good as I am
It isn´t as bad as it looks

Double comparative
The double comparative occurs when two comparatives are used in the
same sentence to show that one action or quality increases or decreases
in relation to another. There are two common structures:
This structure is used to show that as one 1. "The + comparative,
thing changes, another thing also changes in
the + comparative"
a related way.
Examples:
The more you practice, the better you become.
(As you practice more, your skills improve.)
The colder it gets, the more clothes we need.
(As the temperature drops, we need more clothing.)
The less you study, the worse your grades will be.
(If you study less, your grades will decline.)
The Superlative
🔹 What is the
superlative?
The superlative form is used to show that one thing is the most (or least) in a
group of three or more.
How to form the superlative
1. Short adjectives (1 syllable or 2 syllables ending in -y):
✅ Add -est at the end
✅ Use "the" before the adjective
When do we double the final consonant?
We double the final consonant before adding -est (or -er) if these three conditions are
met:
1. The adjective is short (1 syllable)
2. It ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern
smart = smartest
short = shortest
Easy= easiest
Funny = funniest
Long = longest
Late = latest
Examples Fat = fattest
Hot = hottest
The smartest students go to college
Who is the shortest person in the
room?
I watch the latest news on
Facebook
2. Long adjectives (2+ syllables
not ending in -y):
✅ Use "the most" + adjective
Beautiful = the most beautiful
Popular = the most popular
Polite = the most polite
Disciplined = the most disciplined
Succesful = the most succesfull
Famous = the most famous
Examples
Admirable = the most admirable
Annoying = the most annoying.
The most popular app in the world is
Whatsapp.
The most disciplined students get
good grades.
The most succesful Youtuber is Mr.
Beast.
One of the most admirable qualities is
humility.
Irregular Superlatives
Some adjectives have irregular forms:
Good = The best
Bad = The worst
Far = The farthest
Little = The least
Manny = The most
For Example
The best option is to go this way.
They made the worst decision.
That is the farthest way to get to his
house.
Of all the students, Tom was the least
prepared for the exam.
One of the people with the most money in
the world is Elon Musk.
Inferiority Superlative
The inferiority superlative is used to say that something has the least amount
of a quality — it’s the opposite of saying something is the most.
💡 It’s built with “the least” + adjective.
Expensive = the least expensive
Important= the least important
Useful = the least useful
Common = the least common.
Affordable = the least affordable.
Examples
This is the least expensive hotel in
town
The least important thing.
That is the least useful app.
He is the least common person I know
