The façade of a building is often the most important aspect from

Façades a design standpoint, as it sets the tone for the rest of the building.
From the engineering perspective of a building, the façade is also
of great importance due to its impact on energy efficiency.

In July 2006, the project is the winner of an architectural contest,
for the resolution of a “skin” for a technical building containing an
self generation electrical plant for cement factory. The Factory
wanted to generate also a corporative image with the building.
Their purpose became a mutual opportunity to generate an
experimentation laboratory of technical possibilities with the
material they produce, with very low density concretes.

In a parallel way with the technical solution they found a high symbolic value in cultural
textures found in the 3 sites the project was built, which had manual work implied, making
an industrial building a reference for the local people of each site. As a result they designed
2 great format prefabricated pieces placed in a way to simulate the textures made by the
locals in fibers to fabricate artisanal objects.

The Museum of San Telmo

9
The San Telmo Museum has culminated a process of renewal
and extension required to reach out to the public in this new 21st
century. The keystone to this project is the small architectonic
„gem” incrusted in Mount Urgull and designed by the architects
Nieto & Sobejano, featuring a characteristic facade covered in
plants.

This new building, along with the 16th century Dominican convent
housing the museum since 1932, made San Telmo a singular
spot located right in the centre of San Sebastian, in the Old Town.

The truss structure also appears within the interior space of the third floor
and these triangulated geometric patterns from structure were selected
for the façade cladding pattern of the building’s exterior shell. The double-
layered exterior shell for the south and west facade is the solution for such
requirement with aluminum louvers whose forms are similar to those of
ventilation fins of an air conditioner. The louvers welcome in the presence of
natural light and outside surroundings.

The geometries and principles of design
found on-site are reflected in the streetsi-
de façade: three-dimensional façade ele-
ments vary according to the uses involved
and are developed from the ground plan in
a logically consistent manner.

Following the principle of being like a model,
the differentiation of the façades and the
roof is missing; their homogenous covering
is made up of prefabricated fine concrete
facing panels, with a slightly transformed
pattern of grapevines climbing and twining
around them. If natural lighting needs to be
provided in the inside spaces, the bands in
the reinforced concrete model, following its
geometry, were replaced by a light structu-
re and glass cladding and the facing panel
by a perforated metal sheet. Naturally the
same grapevine pattern continues on this
latter one, pulling it together into a unified
surface.
