Objective:
Explore shapes in poetry by creating a shape poem or calligram and contribute to a class display board.
Materials Needed:
• Paper (any kind)
• Markers, crayons, colored pencils
• Pencil, eraser
• Ruler and compass (optional)
• Scissors (optional)
• Printer or computer (optional)
• PowerPoint Presentation

Steps to Complete Your Homework:


1. What is a Shape Poem?
A shape poem is where the words form a shape related to the subject. For example, a poem about a cat arranged
to look like a cat.
2. What is a Calligram?
A calligram is a poem where the words form an image representing the subject, blending art and poetry.
3. Look at Examples:
Explore some shape poems and calligrams. Consider the shape, how words fit, and why the poet chose it.
4. Choose Your Shape:
Pick a shape that fits your topic:
 Star for wishes
 Tree for nature
 Heart for love
 Fish for the ocean
 Sun for weather
5. Write Your Poem or Calligram:
 Shape Poem: Write a short poem that matches your shape.
 Calligram: Arrange your words to create an image related to your subject.
6. Shape Your Poem or Calligram:
Lightly draw the shape with a pencil, then arrange your poem to follow the outline. Add details inside or around
the shape if needed.
7. Decorate and Color:
Color your shape poem or calligram, using colors that match your subject.
8. Cut Out (Optional):
If your shape can be cut out, do so carefully to highlight the shape.
9. Create a Display:
Make more than one shape poem or calligram for the class display, such as a sun or cloud.
