Abstract
Background:
A skin allergy is when skin becomes irritated because the immune system reacted to something that is usually
harmless. This is called an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction can cause rash, itching, burning, redness,
bumps, hives, and swelling. Many different allergens can cause a reaction. Diagnosis of skin allergy involves a
combinations of clinical evaluation, Recommend allergy testing such as Skin prick test , Intradermal (under the
skin) skin test, Blood tests (specific IgE), Patch test. Treatment for skin allergy varies depending on the problem
and the allergen includes two approaches Avoid the allergen if it is known and Use medicines such as creams,
and other strategies to relieve the itching ( like calamine lotion), swelling ( like Moisturize the skin several
times a day with an ointment or lotion that has no alcohol), or pain relievers.
Objectives:
We carry out our study To estimate the risk factor and prevalence of life impairment of self-reported allergies
and skin reactions among students of 5th and 6th grade in UST Sana'a-Yemen 2024.
Method:
The study was at University of Science and Technology Hospital that is located in Sana’a,
Madhbah, AL-Stteen Street, Yemen- opposite the northern gate of Sanaa university, and was
done on 20/1/2024. The sample size was of the students of medical schools (5th and 6th grade)
which was about 276 students . With randomized sample method. The tool of Data Collection
was checklist. Data analysis is by clearing, coding, interring, analysis of data in SPSS version 23
and Microsoft EXCEL.
Results:
The sample collection of the students of medical schools (5th and 6th grade) which was about 276 students to
determine the following:
By studying of Socio-demographic features, the mean age was is the mean age is 25 years, and the minimum
age affected was 21 years while the maximum was 29 years, The Gender of the students is 58% for males while
that for females was 48%. most of the students were 6th Medical level (82%). most of the students are in the
middle of their siblings (73.2%). almost half of the students are married and half of them are single no one is
divorced.
chronic diseases about 92% didn’t have any kind of chronic diseases while only 20 students had chronic
diseases (12% of them had obesity). smoking most of the participants smokes Cigarette or hookah (81% of
them).
allergy in family members and we found that 43% has at least one family member suffer from allergy. 52
students said that at least one of their family members has asthma. participants eat fast food 39% said that they
eat fast food once a weak while 14% eat fast food twice to three times a weak but 9% eat fast food more than
three times a weak and 38% never eats fast food. sports 27% said that they never practice sports but 26.5%
stating that they practiced sport once weekly.
By studing of past allergies showed that 75.5% had no allergy before while 24.5% had allergy at least once
before, and 23% had an allergy at least once in the last 12 months, only 7.7% of them have diagnosed by a
specialist for allergy, 4.4% participants were diagnosed by ENT specialist.
By studying of the risk factors of the allergies, 31.3% said that heat always affect them while 17.5% said rarely,
and 51.5% said they always affect them, then about cold 7.5% said that they are affected always by allergy to
cold weather and 30% are rarely affected, and 62.5% are not affected. Also, 32.7% of them said that they are
always affected by allergy when they are exposed to dust while 41.3% of them are rarely affected, and only
26% are never affected by the dust.
31% of the participants said that they are rarely affected by allergy from certain drugs, while the majority 69%
never had any allergy from any kind of drugs. In females 38.5% of them rarely have allergy from using makeup
but 61.5% never had any allergy from using makeup.
25% from all participants said that they always have allergy from wearing jewelries that are not made of gold,
while 15.8% said that they are rarely affected, when 60.2% never been affected.
In order to see if sun light affect them allergy, 24% said that they are always affected by allergy due to sun
while 18.8% rarely are affected, and 57.2% never been affected
Including animals 76% said they never been affected, and only said that they are 24% rarely affected by them.
By stauding of discomfort and allergy effect on life, Itching impaired the live of 41.2% and 58.6% weren’t
impaired, only 14.7% were exhausted and about embracement 21.7% felt shy and only 15.1% had sleep
disturbance, 7.4% had depression, also 23.9% has said that they lost focus also most of the people who had
itching (around 40.4%) said that they had difficulty running daily errands. 12.1% said that they were absent less
than 4 days per month while 11.4% were absent less than 14 days but the majority of them (76.5%) weren’t
absent due to itching.
also in pain only 7.7% impaired their live. But 92.3% haven’t felt any pain due to skin allergy. 7.4 % of the
participants felt exhaustion and also 7.4% had sleep disturbances, No one of them had shyness or embracement
or depressed or decrease focus or affected their daily errands or absent from lectures due to pain.
Conclusions:
The result of the study that had done at UST 5th and 6th medical students revealed the allergy seems to affect a
lot of them with female preponderance. allergy can be accounted as popular disease, so the students who have
allergies they have shown to affect their life badly and the risk factors that can affect their allergy are a lot like
dust and seasonal change.
It's a big problem and needs to be resolved and most of the researches don’t focus on this big problem.
General recommendation:
The prevalence of life-disabling self-reported allergies and skin reactions among students is a big problem that
needs to be solved and most research does not focus on this big problem. Therefore, it is recommended to focus
on this topic and conduct research to seek to solve this life problem
Specific Recommendations:
1-the research found that itching have the greater prevalence of life impairment of self reported allergies and
skin reactions among university of science and technology medical students . therefore it is recommended to
visit dermatology doctor to solve the proplem to decrease life impairment
