Quiz - 2

The document contains a quiz with four problems related to structural engineering using A36 steel. Each problem involves calculations for different steel sections and loading conditions, including a strut, columns, and a transmission tower. Specific properties of the W310X62 and C250X45 sections are provided for analysis.

In the following problems, use A36 steel unless otherwise specified.

QUIZ # 2

1. A strut BC that is shown in the Figure below is fabricated from a W310X62 section
and a C250X45 channel arranged as shown below. The billboard 5m high by 4m
wide has a total factored weight of 1500 kN. H=2.5m, 𝜃 = 60°. Compute the
factored pressure q in the figure in kPa.

W310X62 Properties:
Ag = 7590 mm2 tw = 7.5 mm E = 200,000MPa
d = 303 mm Ix = 129X106 mm4
bf = 203 mm Iy = 18.3X106 mm4
tf = 13.1 mm Fy = 250 MPa

C250X45 Properties:
Ag = 5670 mm2 tw = 17.1 mm E = 200,000MPa
d = 254 mm Ix = 42.8X106 mm4 Fy = 250 MPa
bf = 76 mm Iy = 1.6X106 mm4
tf = 11.1 mm x = 16.3 mm

2. A hinged-end columns at A, B and C are 6 m long and is fabricated from a

W310X62 section and two C250X45 channels arranged as shown in the Figure
below. The 1.8 m diameter circular plate is supported by equally spaced posts
along its circumference. A service dead load of P = 1150 kN is placed at a distance
x = 0.45 m from post A. Check the adequacy of the posts considering the weight
of the plate. The plate is 45 mm thick and the unit weight of steel is 77 kN/m3.

W310X62 Properties:
Ag = 7590 mm2 tw = 7.5 mm E = 200,000MPa
d = 303 mm Ix = 129X106 mm4
bf = 203 mm Iy = 18.3X106 mm4
tf = 13.1 mm Fy = 250 MPa

C250X45 Properties:
Ag = 5670 mm2 tw = 17.1 mm E = 200,000MPa
d = 254 mm Ix = 42.8X106 mm4 Fy = 250 MPa
bf = 76 mm Iy = 1.6X106 mm4
tf = 11.1 mm x = 16.3 mm
3. Investigate the adequacy of members CE and FJ in a transmission tower having a
section of W310X62 as shown in the Figure below. All loads are factored. Assume
roller support at A and hinge support at B.

W310X62 Properties:
Ag = 7590 mm2 tw = 7.5 mm E = 200,000MPa
d = 303 mm Ix = 129X106 mm4
bf = 203 mm Iy = 18.3X106 mm4
tf = 13.1 mm Fy = 250 MPa

4. Column GH of the framing system where side sway is inhibited is consists of two
C200X17 channels and a 250X10 mm cover plate placed as shown in the Figure
below. Assume column HI has the same section with column GH and that the
moment of inertia of girders is Ig = 0.0003107 m4. Determine the allowable service
live load of column GH if its service dead load including its own weight is 500 kN.

C200X17 Properties:
Ag = 2170 mm2 tw = 5.6 mm E = 200,000MPa
d = 203 mm Ix = 13.5X106 mm4 Fy = 250 MPa
bf = 57 mm Iy = 0.544X106 mm4 rx = 78.9 mm
tf = 9.9 mm x = 14.5 mm ry = 15.8 mm
