Grade 7 General Science - Unit 5 Summary

Unit 5: Living Things and Their Diversity

Unit 5: Living Things and Their Diversity

5.1 Living Things

5.1.1 Characteristics of Living Things:

- Movement: Ability to change position.

- Respiration: Release of energy from food.

- Sensitivity: React to stimuli.

- Growth: Increase in size or number of cells.

- Reproduction: Producing offspring.

- Excretion: Removal of waste.

- Nutrition: Intake and use of food.

5.1.2 Classification and Scientific Names of Organisms:

- Classification groups organisms based on similarities.

- Scientific names follow binomial nomenclature (Genus + species).

Example: Homo sapiens (human).

- Latin is used for universality.

5.1.3 Hierarchy in the Classification of Organisms:

- Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species

- Species is the most specific and members can interbreed.

5.2 The Kingdoms of Life

5.2.1 Kingdom Animalia:

- Multicellular, eukaryotic, no cell wall.

- Heterotrophs (consume food).

Grade 7 General Science - Unit 5 Summary

- Examples: humans, insects, birds.

5.2.2 Kingdom Plantae:

- Multicellular, eukaryotic, with chlorophyll and cell walls.

- Autotrophs (make food via photosynthesis).

- Examples: trees, grass, flowers.

5.2.3 Kingdom Protista:

- Mostly unicellular, eukaryotic.

- Autotrophs (like algae) and heterotrophs (like amoeba).

- Examples: paramecium, euglena.

5.2.4 Kingdom Monera:

- Unicellular, prokaryotic (no nucleus).

- Include bacteria and cyanobacteria.

- Autotrophs or heterotrophs.

5.2.5 Kingdom Fungi:

- Mostly multicellular, eukaryotic, with cell walls (no chlorophyll).

- Heterotrophs that decompose organic matter.

- Examples: mushrooms, yeast, mold.
