DATA COLLECTION:

General
LOAD ESTIMATION:

General
LOAD ESTIMATION:

 Determine the spaces required for electrical substation and rooms.

 Determine the rating of required electrical tie in, bulk equipment and
switchgears.
 Apply for the permits of the project by providing the assigned
electricity company with total project load.
 Determine the primary electrical works cost.

1- AREAS:

General
2- POWER DENSITY:

Power Density: Is a value that is multiplied by the area of a room, space, or a

building to transform this area into an electrical load (KVA, KW)that in order
to estimate the load required for the project at the primary phase of design
before having the final actual loads.
 Common Units: VA/m2 , W/m2, W/ft2, VA/ft2 .
 Power Density value is obtained from the codes, regulations and
standards tables or (experienced electrical consultants) as per the load
estimation method used.
 If the load estimation step is performed accurately, the estimated load
will be within the same range of the actual load at the final project
phases. General
3- TYPES OF LOADS

General
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEMAND AND
DIVERSITY FACTORS

Demand factor: Is applied for 1 group of loads to obtain the Maximum Demand Load
(Such as: taking a certain demand factor for lighting loads in a project as all lighting
fixtures will not operate in the same time).

Diversity Factor: Is applied for different load groups, to obtain the Maximum Diversified
Load
(Such as: applying a diversity factor on an apartment panel , as all the panel loads
(Lighting, Sockets, A/C, …etc.) will note operate simultaneously).

Note: All the demand and diversity factors stated by codes and standards are only for
guidance, the design engineer has the upper hand as per the project conditions. Only
regulations diversity factors are Mandatory

3- TYPES OF LOADS

 Electrical Discipline Loads: Lighting Loads, and Small Power (Sockets) Loads

 Other discipline loads & Special Loads :

 HVAC – Mechanical – Plumbing (Water Heaters, Water Pumps, Hand
Dryer)- Fire Fighting – IT ,Telecommunication & Low Current – Medical
Loads – Motors & MCCs – Kitchen Special Equipment (by kitchen
consultant) – Office Special Equipment (Scanners – Printers – Screens –
Photo Copiers) – Conveyance Loads (Elevators & Escalators) – Special
Lighting Loads (by lighting supplier or specialist)

General
4- LOAD ESTIMATION METHODS
Overall Method :

The Built Up area of the building is multiplied by a the selected Power

Density as per the project application from the code.

(Note: Special loads will be added as demand loads as per their scenario
of operation (provided by other disciplines design engineers) to the
above product, unless they are included in the power density as per the
used code)

4- Load Estimation Methods
Exact Method:
 The same as load break down method, but the power densities are
obtained by code of practice and the deep project experience of the
electrical consultant engineers in projects of the same application.

 It is the method that gives the most accurate load, and the nearest to
that calculated at final project phases
