Ecology Lab

The lab aims to construct a food web based on organisms observed in a selected habitat. Students will record the names and food sources of animals, define key ecological terms, discuss energy transfer, and analyze the impact of removing organisms from the ecosystem. Observations and discussions will be documented in a structured format.

Lab #: 1

Date: October 11, 2024

Topic: Food Chains and food Webs
Aim: To construct a food web based on living organisms observed in the natural environment
Skill Assessed: ORR
Materials: Pencil, ruler, book
Method:
1.Take a trip, in the school yard and select a habitat to observe.
2.Take note of the plants and animals found in the habitat and the type of food being eaten by
the animals.
3.Use a table to record the name and food source of each animal.
4.Construct a food web for the habitat that was studied. Include at least one (1) organism
from each of the three trophic levels in the food web.

Observations:
 Table with title written in CAPS and underlines
 Food web with title written in CAPS and underlined

Discussion:
 Define key terms related to the topic and the lab e.g. (ecosystem, producer, consumer,
trophic levels etc.)
 Talk about how energy is transferred in ecosystems.
 Say what would happen if certain organisms were removed from the habitat.
Conclusion:
