didn’t have any plan or anything like that.
It just sounded like a brilliant way to make
a living, travelling around the world,
doing those things, working with great
people, having all those incredible stories
– that sounded great. I was doing street
magic in Bath. I took my A-Levels a bit
early so when I graduated I thought I
would take a year off and go to Australia
because I heard that street performing
was good there. I had saved up money
from the previous summer’s busking in
England and thought I would just travel
through the winter. I went over, did a
couple of shows, and fell on my rear end
because the audiences there didn’t go for
the twee, happy-type persona that had
worked so well in Bath. I decided to do
one more show, before just backpacking
instead, and tell the audience exactly
what I thought of them.

N Exactly. That new attitude worked. As
I got annoyed at them and told them they
were a terrible audience and they didn’t
get my act, they loved it. So I realised
that’s what worked over there. I worked
with it and got booked for a long run at
Expo 88 which led to other festival
bookings around the world.
M Did you go from doing the busking to
doing comedy in clubs?
