2011

The Census was first started under British Viceroy Lord Mayo in 1872. It helped in framing new
policies, government programs to uplift areas of improvement in the community.
● It is conducted every 10 years since 1872.
● Census 2011 was the 15th census of India & 7th census after Independence.

● The motto of census 2011 was “Our Census, Our future”.


● The mascot of census 2011 was woman enumerator.

● C.M. Chandramauli was the registrar General & Census Commissioner when census 2011 was
conducted
● The 15th Indian Census was conducted in two phases, house listing and population
enumeration.
● Census 2011 marks the first time biometric information was collected.
