ANNA
I work in a fairly traditional office environment doing a typical nine-to-five job. I like my job, but i
t's annoying that my commute to work takes an hour and a half each way and most of my work coul
d really be done online from home. But my boss doesn't seem to trust that we will get any work don
e if left to our own devices, and everyone in the company has to clock in and out every day. It's frus
trating that they feel the need to monitor what we do so closely instead of judging us based on our t
ask performance, like most companies do these days.
LUCY
I used to do a typical five-day week, but after I came out of my parental leave, I decided that I want
ed to spend more time with my children before they start school. After negotiating with my boss, w
e decided to cut my working week down to a three-day work week. This of course meant a significa
nt cut in my pay too, as I'm paid on a pro-rata basis. I've since noticed, though, that my workload ha
sn't decreased in the slightest! I'm now doing five days' worth of work in three days, but getting pai
d much less for it! I find myself having to take work home just so that I can meet the deadlines. It's
wearing me out trying to juggle work with looking after my children and my family, but I don’t dar
e to bring this up with my boss because I think he feels as if he's made a huge concession letting me
come in only three days a week.
LOUIS
I work for a global IT company, but because their headquarters is in the States, I do all my work onl
ine from home. That means that I don't waste time commuting or making idle chit-chat with colleag
ues. I work on a project basis, and this flexibility is very valuable to me because it means that I can
easily take some time off when my children need me to go to their school performances or if I need
to schedule an appointment with the dentist. The downside is that without clear office hours, I tend
to work well into the evening, sometimes skipping dinner to finish a task. It can also get quite lonel
y working on my own, and I sometimes miss sharing ideas with colleagues.
LILY
I'm a freelancer and work for myself. This is great because I am in control of what I do and how I s
pend my time. At first, I was working from home, but I found it really hard to concentrate. There w
9
ere just too many distractions around: housework that needed doing, another cup of tea, my family
members wanting my attention for various things. So I started to go to a nearby café to work, but th
e Wi-Fi connection wasn't ideal and I found myself drinking too much coffee. In the end, I decided
to rent a desk in a co-working space with five other freelancers like myself. I liked getting dressed t
o go to work in the morning and being able to focus in an office environment. The other freelancers
do similar kinds of web-based work to me and so it's nice to have workmates to bounce ideas off as
well.

Teenagers today are undergoing lots of changes. They are between the ages of 13 to 19. Many of th
em are undergoing physical and emotional changes. These are the stages in teenagers that are unavo
idable.
The teenage life is full of happiness, sadness, enjoyment and it can be interesting too. This is becau
se in teenage life, a teenager is subjected to physical growth, hormonal changes and even dilemmas.
They may be in a stage of conflict like undergoing puppy love. This is only a normal part of life.
Making friends is part and parcel of a teenager's life. The teenager should enjoy life by making frie
nds with peers and participate in healthy activities such as camping, picnic, kayaking, swimming an
d so on. Through friends, a teenager learns to joke, laugh and play to release stress and tension. By
making friends, the teenager learns to sweeten his or her joys and even eases the bitterness of life's
downtime.
Many teenagers are very conscious of their physical outlook. It is at this part of their life that beauty
strikes as the main self-image. They love to follow up with the latest trends for dressing, hairstyle a

II. Read the following passage and then decide whether statements are true (T) or false (F).
From the 20th to the 21st century, there have been significant changes in the majority of cou
ntries around the world. Substantial differences are evident between the way we live today and the
way we lived a century ago. Vietnam is no exception although there are some aspects of life in Viet
nam that are similar to the way of life of the 20th century. Living in Vietnam today differs greatly f
rom the lifestyle of 100 years ago. People in the past mainly worked in agriculture, whereas today t
here are significantly fewer people working in this sector of the economy. These days, by comparis
on, people are more likely to be employed in manufacturing and tourism than in the rice fields. Mor
eover, Vietnam, which was traditionally agricultural, is transforming into an entirely different count
ry. While agriculture is still an important component of the Vietnamese economy, other enterprises
are accounting for an increasing amount of economic activity.

13
However, along with the differences, similarities also exist. The Vietnamese have kept many
of the characteristics of their forefathers. The Vietnamese people are as friendly today as they were
in the past. This is best illustrated in the way they welcome foreigners. Moreover, the determination
of the people of Vietnam has not changed. The Vietnamese work collectively and happily towards t
he development of their country. To conclude, while there are differences in past and present lifesty
les, there are important similarities. Although Vietnam has changed in many ways, there always ha
ve been, and always will be, the friendly welcoming smiles of the Vietnamese people.
______ 1. Vietnam has transformed from a traditionally agricultural country into one where other e
nterprises are becoming more prominent.
______ 2. The text states that the majority of people in Vietnam today work in agriculture, just as t
hey did 100 years ago.
______ 3. The Vietnamese people have retained their friendliness, as seen in how they welcome for
eigners.
______ 4. The text mentions that although lifestyles have changed, the determination of the Vietna
mese people to work towards the development of their country has remained the same.
______ 5. The text claims that Vietnam has completely abandoned its agricultural roots in favour of
industrialization and tourism.
