Visiting the Libreria Acqua alta bookshop in Venice

Elena

The bookshop belongs to Luigi Frizzo. His ideas for the shop are great. During the
winter, the sea enters many of the buildings in Venice. But Luigi’s books don’t get wet
because he keeps them in boats and baths instead of bookcases! And not all the books
are for people to buy. Old textbooks and dictionaries are now pieces of furniture and
art. There are also books on top of each other to make some stairs. I loved climbing up
them to the roof and looking out over the city.

Rosie

Last May, I spent a week in Venice with my parents and walked around the city every
day. One day, we saw the Libreria Acqua Alta, or ‘High Water Bookshop’ in English.
Outside, it looked like other bookshops. We went in because I wanted a map. We then
saw it was very different. It wasn’t tidy, but was full of wonderful things: thousands of
books and about ten friendly cats! This bookshop was my favourite place in Venice.

Christina

I visited Libreria Acqua Alta one morning in June and I loved it. Many visitors in the
shop felt the same as me. I spoke to a lot, and they were not only tourists. Local
families enjoy visiting the shop too because it is so different, and you can find every
kind of book there. Luigi Frizzo owns the shop, and he was there that morning. He took
me to see the building’s fire exit. It was very funny – the door just opens onto the
water
