3. Rewrite sentence from active to passive and passive to active.

( Giving examples of sentences using the voices of the Verbs)
Identify whether the verb used in the given sentences function as active or passive voice.

1. The dog ate my homework.


My homework was eaten by the dog.

2. The child catches the fish.


The fish caught by the child.

C. Lesson Proper

Discussion:
The Voices of the Verb
Voice refers to the form of a verb that indicates when a grammatical subjects performs the
action or is the receiver of the action. When a sentence is written in the active voice, the
subject performs the action; in the passive voice, the subject receive the action. In academic
writing, it is generally preferred to choose an active verb and pair it with a subject that
names the person or thing doing or performing the action. Active verb are stronger and
usually more emphatic than forms of the verb.

ACTIVE VOICE
 The subject/ doer is performing the action.
 The object receives the action of the verb.

Examples:
1. The puppeteer manipulated the stings.

2. Dead leaves gathered in the garden.

PASSIVE VOICE
 The subject/ doer receives the action of the verb
 The object becomes the subject.

Examples:
1. This house was built by my father.

2. A letter was being written by him.

Other examples:
A The chef cooks food every day.
P Food is cooked (by the chef) every day

Ways in Transforming Verb Voice


Examples:
Active: They buy a brand-new Nissan Sentra.
Passive: A brand-new Nissan Sentra is bought by them.

Active: They bought a brand-new Nissan Sentra.


Passive: A brand-new Nissan Sentra was bought by them.

Active: They shall buy a brand-new Nissan Sentra.


Passive: A brand-new Nissan Sentra shall be bought by them.

D. Application
The teacher will provide different tasks to the groups.
The class is divided into two groups:

Group 1 – is tasked to change the sentences from passive form of the verb to active form.

1. Christmas is celebrated every year.


2. Food has been cooked in the kitchen.
3. The laboratory room was being cleaned.
Group 2 – is tasked to change sentences from active form of the verb to passive form.
1. We celebrate Christmas every year.
2. Kaye has cooked food in the kitchen.
3. The working student was cleaning the laboratory room.
