REFLECTION
On March 16, 2025, I attended a seminar on Research Writing Methodology at San Rafael
National High School Annex Campus. As a Grade 11 ABM (Accountancy, Business, and
Management) student, this seminar was very helpful because it taught me the basics of research
writing, which is a skill I will need in the future, especially for school and later in my career. I
learned a lot from the seminar, and I’m excited to apply what I learned in my studies and other
projects.
The seminar started by explaining what research writing is and why it ’ s so important.
Before attending this seminar, I didn’t realize how much planning and organizing goes into writing
a good research paper. Research writing is not just about collecting random facts; it’s about finding
useful information, organizing it properly, and then writing it in a clear way that answers a specific
question or problem. I now understand that research writing helps us make informed decisions and
adds value to the things we study. For example, in business, research is used to analyze markets,
study consumer behavior, and solve business problems. This is why it is important for me to learn
how to write research papers, as I will need these skills in the future for business-related tasks.
One of the first things I learned was how to pick a good research topic. The speaker
explained that when choosing a topic, it’s important to select something that interests you. This will
make the research process more enjoyable and help you stay focused. I also learned that the topic
should be specific and clear enough to be researched well. For instance, instead of choosing a broad
topic like “business,” a better choice would be something like “the effect of digital marketing on
small businesses.” This tip will help me when I’m asked to write research papers in the future, as I
now know how to choose topics that are both interesting and manageable.
The next important lesson was how to create a strong research question. The research
question is very important because it is the main focus of the entire paper. The speaker explained
that the question should be clear, specific, and something that can be answered through research. A
good research question guides the entire process and helps you stay on track while writing your
paper. I didn’t realize how important it was to carefully create a research question, but now I know
that a well-thought-out question is key to doing good research.
Another important point that was discussed in the seminar was finding reliable sources of
information. I learned that not all sources are trustworthy, and it ’ s important to use reliable and
credible sources when writing a research paper. The speaker explained that we should always check
who wrote the information, when it was written, and where it was published. For example, books,
journal articles, and reputable websites are usually good sources. On the other hand, websites like
blogs or random internet pages may not always have trustworthy information. Learning how to
evaluate sources carefully will make my research stronger and more reliable.
The speaker also taught us about the structure of a research paper. I learned that a research
paper is divided into different sections, such as the introduction, the literature review, the
methodology, the results, the discussion, and the conclusion. Each section has a specific purpose,
and it ’ s important to follow this structure when writing a research paper. The introduction
introduces the research question, the literature review looks at what other people have already said
about the topic, the methodology explains how the research will be done, the results show the
findings, the discussion analyzes the findings, and the conclusion wraps everything up. I found this
part of the seminar especially helpful because it made me realize how organized and structured a
research paper needs to be.
One of the most important things I learned during the seminar was how to avoid plagiarism.
The speaker explained that plagiarism is when you copy someone else’s work without giving them
credit. This is very serious and can result in penalties in school. I learned that we need to always
cite the sources we use in our research papers. Before the seminar, I wasn ’ t sure about how to
properly cite sources, but now I feel more confident about how to do it correctly.
The speaker also shared some useful tips for writing a research paper. One of the tips was to
break the work into smaller tasks. Writing a research paper can be overwhelming, but if you take it
one step at a time, it becomes easier. The speaker suggested starting with creating an outline,
gathering information, writing a rough draft, and then revising the paper. This method helps you
stay organized and keeps the work from becoming too stressful. Another tip that stuck with me was
the importance of time management. I learned that if I start early and plan my time well, I will be
able to finish the research paper on time without feeling rushed.
A big part of the seminar was also about critical thinking. The speaker explained that
research is not just about collecting facts; it’s also about thinking deeply about the information you
find. You need to analyze the information, question assumptions, and look at it from different
angles. I now realize that research writing is not just about reporting what others have said it ’ s
about thinking carefully about the evidence and forming my own conclusions. This is a very
important skill, especially in business, where making decisions based on research is key to success.
Overall, the seminar was a great learning experience. It gave me a lot of useful tips and
ideas that I can apply when I need to write research papers in the future. As a Grade 11 ABM
student, I know that research writing is a skill I will need throughout my studies, especially in
subjects related to business and management.
