HISTORY OF TIRUPATI

Here’s a detailed yet concise overview of the History of Tirupati, one of the most sacred and visited
pilgrimage cities in India:

Mythological and Ancient History

 Tirupati is home to the famous Sri Venkateswara Temple located on the Tirumala Hills, which is
believed to be the earthly abode of Lord Vishnu in the form of Venkateswara or Balaji.

 The temple’s origins are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, dating back to the Treta Yuga and
Dvapara Yuga, with references in the Puranas and epic texts like the Ramayana and
Mahabharata.

 The Varaha Purana and Brahmanda Purana mention the sanctity of Tirumala and the worship of
Lord Venkateswara.

Historical Development

 Pallava Period (6th–9th century CE): The earliest inscriptions found at the temple belong to the
Pallava kings, who contributed to the initial development of the shrine.

 Chola and Pandya Dynasties (9th–13th century): These South Indian rulers made significant
donations and expanded temple activities.

 Vijayanagara Empire (14th–17th century): This was a golden age for Tirupati. Kings like
Krishnadevaraya made grand donations, built gopurams (temple towers), and expanded the
temple's wealth and influence.

 Several temples in Tirumala and Tirupati were constructed during this time, and many of the
present-day traditions date back to this era.

Colonial Period

 Under British rule, the administration of the temple was left largely to local authorities and
religious heads, though the British recognized its immense economic and spiritual importance.

 A lot of the temple’s revenue and offerings were recorded and taxed during this time.

Modern Period

 In 1933, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) was established by the Madras Presidency
to manage the temple's administration, which continues today under the Government of Andhra
Pradesh.
 Tirupati grew from a temple town into a modern city, with improved infrastructure, educational
institutions, and healthcare facilities.

Today

 Tirupati is one of the most visited religious places in the world, attracting millions of devotees
annually.

 The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is among the richest religious institutions globally.

 The city is also a center for education and culture, with institutions like Sri Venkateswara
University and SVIMS (Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences).
