Worksheet: Adjectives
Adjectives describe or modify nouns. They provide more information about a person, place, or thing.
Language Focus: Types of Adjectives
Adjectives can describe:
- Opinion (e.g., selfish, kind)
- Size (e.g., big, small)
- Shape (e.g., round, thin)
- Age (e.g., young, old)
- Colour (e.g., red, green)
- Origin (e.g., Pakistani, French)
- Material (e.g., wooden, plastic)
- Qualifier (e.g., sleeping bag, race car)
Order of adjectives before a noun: Opinion → Size → Shape → Age → Colour → Origin → Material →
Qualifier
Example: The kind, small, round, young, brown, Pakistani, wooden table.
Why Is It Important to Use Adjectives in the Correct Order?
In English, when we use more than one adjective before a noun, we usually follow a specific order. This
helps the sentence sound natural and clear. If the order is wrong, the sentence may sound awkward or
confusing.
Standard Order of Adjectives:
1. Opinion (e.g., beautiful, boring)
2. Size (e.g., big, small)
3. Shape (e.g., round, square)
4. Age (e.g., young, old)
5. Colour (e.g., red, green)
6. Origin (e.g., French, Chinese)
7. Material (e.g., wooden, plastic)
8. Qualifier/Purpose (e.g., sleeping bag, racing car)
Example (correct):
She has a beautiful small round old red Italian wooden jewellery box.
❌ Wrong order sounds odd:
She has a wooden Italian red old round small beautiful jewellery box.
