Company Profile
SyCip Gorres Velayo & Company was founded by Washington SyCip in
1946. It started as a one-man accounting firm and eventually grew to be the
leading and largest multidisciplinary professional services firm in the Philippines
with nine offices and 62% market share in the country. The company offers four
integrated service lines, namely, Assurance, Tax, Strategy and Transactions, and
Consulting Services. In 2002, SGV became a member practice of Ernst & Young
Global with the aim of further broadening its ability to provide exemplary service
to its clients.
In over 70 years of quality service, the firm’s professional track record is
still unmatched. As guided by its purpose, “Nurturing leaders and enabling
business for a better Philippines at the heart of everything we do”, SGV & Co.
envisions to deliver value-added services to its clients and to become a partner in
their organization’s and their region’s development. Thus, the firm plays a critical
role in building a better working world for its people, clients, and our country. The
company’s high-performing teams across its four integrated service lines work
collaboratively to fulfill the firm’s purpose and create a positive difference.

SGV promotes and values diversity and inclusion especially among its
workforces. The firm hires more than 6,000 professionals from varying fields
composed of 60% female and 40% male employees. In addition, the average
age of employees is 26 years old. Consequently, the company became the first
professional services firm in the Philippines and the Southeast Asian region to
receive the Economic Dividends for Gender Equality (EDGE) Assess-level
certification. It is the world’s leading assessment methodology and business
certification standard for gender equality.
Industry Analysis
SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co. is the leading and largest provider of
professional services in the Philippines. They offer and conduct assurance
services, consulting services, tax services and strategy and transaction services.
Professional services industry refers to businesses whose main output is service
or expertise in a certain field.
Professional services industry involves a series of different professions
that provide services to the businesses in various forms, such as audit,
consulting, tax, and financial advisory services. The industry is undertaken by the
Big Four firms - EY, Deloitte, KPMG, and PwC. The focus of the businesses in
this industry is the expertise of their people, hence, they continuously support
personal and professional development of their employees.

Since professional services firms sell knowledge and expertise rather than
tangible products, they face different challenges, specifically their earnings.
Professional services firms are more profitable when their employees are
productive and bill more hours to clients. Hence, maintaining a productive
workplace and preventing idle hours is very crucial to these firms because they
earn income through billable hours.
According to the professional industry report by Business Research
Company, the global professional services industry market size is expected to
grow from $5.03 trillion in 2020 to $5.43 trillion in 2021 at a compound annual
growth rate of 7%. The growth is due to restructuring and recovery of businesses
from the pandemic.
In the Philippines, the services sector has been the strongest and fastest
growing industry. It has a great contribution to the country’s economy. Thus, SGV
& Co. can take advantage of the opportunities within the industry. The illustration
below shows the Fields of Play of SGV & Co. which explains their holistic
approach in offering services to clients to achieve their long-term value and
sustainable growth.

CLASSROOM LEARNING APPLIED TO ON-THE-JOB TRAINING
Auditing Concepts and Applications. One of the highlights of SGV NLIP
is the Audit Simulation—it is a five-day program filled with individual and group
audit-related activities. We were able to apply the learnings that we obtained
from our Audit courses such as the audit process, audit procedures, assertions,
audit risk model, and more importantly, the characteristics of an auditor as we
conducted case studies, cross-referencing, documentation, and inventory count,
among other things.
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) Page |6
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance

In addition, what made this program more exciting was our firsthand
learning experience with EY Helix—the audit analytics platform used by the firm
in performing audits. Through this, we also learned how the company adapted to
the COVID-19 phenomenon through their transition to virtual audit.
Topics in Taxation. As we conducted a case study on Income Tax and
VAT on our Week 3 of Internship, we were able to apply our knowledge in
computing for corporate tax, value-added tax, and income tax. Furthermore, we
have also examined tax issues presented in the given case.
Accounting Information System. The learnings that we acquired in this
course, which include, but are not limited to, the accounting cycle, source
documents, and program flowcharts, were relevant and useful as we
accomplished
our case studies in consulting and tax and executed activities in audit.

Governance, Business Ethics, Risk Management and Internal
Controls. The theories and concepts that we have obtained from this course
were not just significant to the accounting-related activities we have
accomplished during our OJT but also to the webinars conducted by SGV
partners about Independence and Risk Management, Sustainability and
Sustainability Reporting, and Transformative Leadership. These virtual
discussions made us further understand the functions and importance of having
good governance, business ethics, risk management, and effective internal
controls in a firm.

COMPARISON BETWEEN THEORY OR CONCEPTS TAUGHT IN
CLASSROOM AND EXPERIENCE DURING ON-THE-JOB TRAINING
For the last nine (9) semesters we had before our internship program, we
have learned a lot of theories and concepts regarding different industries, such
as auditing, financial reporting, law, business management, and taxation.
However, there have been differences between the theories and concepts taught
in class and their application in real-life situations.
Inventory count. Evidently, we have discussed inventory management
and audit. Inside the class, we are taught to do physical inventory count only
through the information given in comprehensive problems. However, during our
internship program, we were able to watch and do actual inventory count and we
have learned about the system they are using in physical counting of inventories.
Audit process. The audit process explained in our classroom discussion
was almost like what is happening in the audit practice. The only difference is the
division of tasks in each stage. In practice, there were only four stages of the
process - Initial planning, identifying, and assessing risks, designing, and
executing responses to risks, and concluding and communicating.
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) Page |9
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance
Student Apprenticeship Program
Engagement proper. During class hours, we have only learned about the
theories and concepts in a client engagement and not the actual application of
those. But during our internship program, we have learned the technicalities and
professionalism that is required during an engagement such as communicating
with clients and handing over files through EY Canvas, the system used by SGV
& Co., proper attire in inventory counting, and the like. Engagement in theories
are usually based on traditional engagements rather than digital.
Extent of Substantive Procedures. We know that the extent of
substantive procedures depends on the results of control testing. However, due
to the pandemic, our host company introduced their digital audit approach which
relies heavily and extensively on substantive procedures and limits their control
testing since they cannot perform physical testing of controls.
Consulting services. Consulting service has not been the focus of our
discussions in the accounting courses that we have taken but we know that
consulting services means providing clients advice and tips on how to manage
and improve their business processes. During our on-the-job training, we were
able to know how to communicate with clients and the importance of identifying
the problem and its root cause to give solid recommendations to the client.

Recommendations. During our previous case studies and feasibility
studies, we usually provide recommendations that exist in an ideal world.
However, our host company taught us to give recommendations that are feasible,
and which consider the ability of our client to implement those recommendations.
ISSUES AND CONCERNS ABOUT THE HOST COMPANY
As Internship Host Company
Throughout the whole run of SGV’s Nurturing Leaders Internship Program
(NLIP), we, as interns, managed to be exposed to various service lines with one
of the top and reputable auditing and professional services firms in the country.
Throughout the whole program, we were guided by employees in charge of
various service lines within the company. This ensures that the whole learning
experience was spearheaded by individuals with appropriate credentials and
relevant skills. In line with this, the following are the areas of improvement that
we believe would greatly enhance the processes and activities involved during
the virtual internship program:
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) P a g e | 11
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance

Issuance of company gadgets. The company provided the equipment
and other freebies for the interns to utilize during their internship. However, there
are various reports about defective chargers, unusable usb ports, and
malfunctioning cameras that impeded the performance of interns on various
occasions.
Short internship time frame. The company prepared an organized and
systematic curriculum for the interns. This enumerated the topic of discussion per
service line, along with the activities to be done and skills to be learned from the
start date to end. Even so, we observed that some of the activities lined up for
the day were not given enough time, causing some training exercises to feel
rushed,
hence posting a bigger possibility of having a congested schedule for the
whole program.
Overall, we greatly appreciated how we were taught and molded by skilled
professionals within their respective fields. The virtual environment cultivated by
the company to promote safe spaces for speaking up, during general
discussions, had greatly improved our ability to be more confident in applying our
educational knowledge to real life situations and simulations presented by SGV.
By taking note of the points of concern identified above, the host company can
make sure to create a better program that will continue to nurture and inspire
future interns within the profession of accountancy.

As Industry Player
Threats
Brain drain. Many Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) choose to work
abroad in favor of better job opportunities and compensation. Based on job
market analysis and research, there was a noticeable difference between SGV’s
competitive compensation package and benefits and the international rates from
foreign accounting firms, parallel to the nature of work and amount of time
needed to accomplish job-related tasks.
Competition in the auditing industry. Although SGV continues to be the
firm of choice by top companies within the country for their audit and tax
engagements, along with other services, it is vital to note that the emergence of
small firms and the reputation of the other Big 3 firms in the country continue to
pose pressure to the company as the auditing industry continues to grow.

Adaption of new accounting standards. As the pandemic continues to
change business norms and inevitably impose new and changing business
practices, new accounting standards were issued to encompass these changes,
raising the difficulty level of the licensure examination and the possibility of errors
in applying these changes within the field. The emergence of various modern
standards along with the stringent requirements to earn the CPA title in the
country continue to affect the number of CPAs produced every year.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE HOST COMPANY
1. Issuance of company gadgets.
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) P a g e | 15
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance
Student Apprenticeship Program
We recommend that SGV should perform preliminary inspection and
testing of the company assets that they are going to send to their interns in the
future to avoid unanticipated technical complications during the internship period.
Laptop models do not need to be the most recent versions; however, its
functionality should guarantee a full virtual internship experience for students,
undeterred by mechanical interruptions.
2. Short internship time frame.
We recommend that SGV should consider lengthening the NLIP program
to establish enough time for interns to properly digest industry knowledge and
practices obtained from the training. We believe that making the program into a
10-week internship time frame at most makes it less congested and will give
instructors more time to teach the necessary skills and knowledge involved in
every pertinent service line.
3. Brain drain.
We recommend that the industry should implement reforms within the
accounting profession, to assure current and future generations of accountants
that the efforts, time, and energy they put into their works will be justly and
equitably compensated. To do this, the regulators and policymakers should
examine the root causes that drive CPAs to look for jobs in foreign countries and
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) P a g e | 16
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance
Student Apprenticeship Program
implement better regulations within the profession that champion the welfare and
interests of Filipino CPAs.
4. Competition in the auditing industry.
We recommend that SGV should continue to maintain the quality of their
work with various clients and stakeholders by consistently implementing their
company’s purpose -- nurture leaders and enable businesses -- and values of
integrity, excellence, respect, teaming, and inclusiveness. Through this, SGV can
continue to maintain their highly regarded reputation and work quality, along with
ensuring that their duty with public service is fulfilled.
5. Adaption of new accounting standards
We recommend that the industry should re-examine the impact of the
current pandemic has with the current generation and upcoming batch of CPAs
on a deeper level. Regulators and policymakers should make regulations and
policies that encourage, and not further exclude, future generations of aspirants
to attain and accept not just the title, but also the responsibility it brings with it
SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Personal Accomplishments
● Time management. In this semester, we had to juggle our academics and
internship. On top of that, we also attended refresher programs and took
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) P a g e | 17
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance

weekly comprehensive examinations while accomplishing tasks for the
company. Evidently, we had a hard time balancing our schedule.
However, SGV NLIP offered a program which is helpful for us, interns,
who have difficulty in time management. Through this, they taught us how
to effectively manage our time without compromising our health.
Consequently, we were able to finish and pass our examinations and
assessments while fulfilling our tasks and responsibilities in SGV. The only
key is to prepare a schedule ahead of time and make sure to take a rest,
and prioritize one’s mental, physical, and emotional health.
● Flexibility. SGV NLIP provided a flexible learning experience through a
series of training, webinars, and activities in audit, consulting, tax, strategy
and transactions, and sustainability, enabling us to have an overview
about all the service lines offered by the firm. Hence, this experience
assisted us in being versatile when transitioning from one topic and task to
another. Furthermore, the flexibility of the program also aided us in
discovering the career track which suits us the most.
● Personal and Professional Growth. In every training session, webinar,
talk, presentation, and simulation we have had, we were able to acquire
additional knowledge, wisdom, and expertise about ourselves and our
future profession.
SYCIP GORRES VELAYO & COMPANY (SGV & Co.) P a g e | 18
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance

● Communication Skills. During our internship, the SGV Talent Team
always encouraged us to speak up more, especially during group activities
and question and answer segments after every webinar, which helped us
to further build our confidence in presenting ourselves and communicating
with our superior and peers.
● Prioritizing Mental Health. The talent team, who led the SGV Internship
Program, did not fail to remind the interns about the importance of mental
health. During OJT, they have always reminded us that our virtual
classroom was a safe space. Thus, our opinions and questions are
welcome and will remain confidential. Moreover, the team also prepared a
Mental Health webinar to educate us more and address our concerns
about the topic. Therefore, as former interns of SGV, we have learned to
give significance to self-care by refraining from compromising our mental
health over work or academics and to ask for help from trusted individuals
when necessary.
Career Accomplishments
● We were able to acquire in-depth knowledge about the accounting
software used by the company which are the EY Canvas and EY Helix.

We had the opportunity to operate and utilize them during the audit
simulation training.
● We had an opportunity to explore consulting services through a consulting
simulation program, which enabled us to practice communicating with
clients and recommending solutions to the identified problems of their
company.
● We were able to learn about various tax updates and practices of the
company through tax case study presentations.
● We had an overview of the actual audit engagements, which is very useful
for our professional practice, through an audit simulation program
regarding inventory, audit of revenue, financial statements audit, and audit
program and worksheets.
● We had a chance to learn about how to present ourselves professionally
and how to communicate with clients through various webinars regarding
increasing our impact and influence, purpose talks, personal branding, etc.
● In line with the practices inside the company, we were able to learn about
their business writing techniques and practices such as in writing letters,
communicating with clients, etc.
● In preparation for our professional life, our host company collaborated with
Udemy in providing us certifications which enabled us to further learn

about the technical and soft skills needed in a workplace, such as the use

The pandemic has prevented most of the businesses, not only in the
Philippines but around the world, from operating and serving its customers.
Businesses have left no choice but to follow safety health protocols and strict
government regulations to avoid legal charges. Despite the challenges that the
pandemic had given to us, businesses managed to rise above the occasion. .
This webinar series talked about the steps, ways, or techniques that
businesses can do or offer in order to adapt to the new normal business
situation. All the speakers share the same thought which is to strive for better
business processes and to rise above the challenges of pandemic.
The pandemic not only taught us to take care of ourselves physically and
mentally but it also taught us to be open to adapt to changes. For instance, DTI
shifted to online platforms for safe payments which shows that they became
adaptive. It was also mentioned that according to Charles Darwin, it is not the
strongest species that survives because it is the one that is most adaptable to
change. Being able to adapt to changes happening around you makes you more
likely to survive because then you would be able to know the hows and ways to
live.

In our country, it is evident that we do not evolve faster compared to other
countries; thus, people and businesses should learn to collaborate and share
ideas and platforms that would help one another. Business enterprise should
design its business operation to survive. For example, micro enterprises use
social media because it became useful in these times of pandemic. As we can
see, they have learned a technique in order to survive. Today, we are all learners
because everything is new to us so we need to study new ways and steps in
order to survive since there are no experts in pandemic, hence, we should learn
and help one another. Adjust strategies and start to adapt to changes. We need
to accept the fact that our current situation will stay for a little bit longer. Thus, we
should prepare for another set of challenges that life might throw to us because it
is better to be prepared than to be shocked.
We cannot deny that there are still opportunities in the midst of a
pandemic. For instance, delivery services, sari-sari stores, and online sellers
have become more rampant and famous. Pandemic also opened more
opportunities to small time sellers because big companies are not safe and most
of them declared bankruptcy. The only lesson to this one is no one, not even
business tycoons, is exempted to the challenges of this pandemic. Everybody
should learn to adapt to change in order to survive.
This series taught me to not be afraid to reinvent myself, to be open
minded, to conserve and maximize resources, to combine physical and digital
platforms, and to be part of the supply chain. These few things are the keys to
have a successful business in these times of uncertainty. In addition, being
adaptable to change is very significant today because adaptability equates to
survival.

H&M
September 7, 2021
H&M stands for Hennes and Mauritz. Hennes literally means “hers” in
Swedish because the founder only sells women's clothes. However, when they
acquired another brand named Mauritz, a Stockholm-based retailer that sold
hunting and fishing equipment, they decided to incorporate the name “Mauritz”
since the company decided to offer men’s and children’s clothing and “hennes”
would become inappropriate. H&M is a foreign brand that has local branches that
operate in different cities in the Philippines. Its first Philippine branch was opened
in 2014 at SM Megamall Fashion Hall.
The virtual tour in H&M talked about the company background and its
programs offered. We also had the chance to see store branches. In my own
knowledge, upon graduating in my program, I would work in auditing firms or
other professional firms, banks, corporations, financial institutions, and other
similar businesses. I have never imagined that this kind of company, a fashion
company, would offer great opportunities to us, accountancy students.
In listening to this webinar, I have learned that we should not limit
ourselves from opportunities since we used to know that we are only good in the
field of money, businesses, tax, consulting, and finance, we can also be in other
fields that are far from our comfort zone but can likewise contribute to our career.

Johnson and Johnson Philippines
September 21, 2021
In this time of pandemic, the company of Johnson and Johnson has
become more relevant. J&J are always known for their bath and body care
products such as lotions, shampoos, and soaps. However, J&J not only offer
these kinds of products, they also offer vaccines. The long standing company
has an objective to change the direction of human health by finding cure and
protection.
Most people know about the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. This vaccine is
a product of Johnson & Johnson company. Unlike other vaccines, one shot is
enough when you are using this product. Additionally, it has 66.3% efficacy in
clinical trials. By producing this product, J&J company has proven that they care
about the health of their consumers. They also have studies and trials in
producing vaccines for psoriasis, cancer, and other diseases.

Furthermore, the webinar talked about how J&J addresses the needs of
their customers. They have what they called “Credo responsibility” which reminds
them what matters most and guides them on making decisions. Customers,
employees, communities, and shareholders are their priorities. First, they invest
in the health of their customers. They innovate for all through pharmaceuticals,
medical devices, and consumer health products. Second, their team or their
employees. They aim to have a healthy workforce and to empower people to be
at their best by giving them innovative benefits, steadfast resources,
collaboration across companies, flexible work arrangements, global network, and
meaningful impact. The third one is the community. J&J fulfills their Credo
responsibility so that people, planet and businesses can all live in good health
today and in the future. It is through sustainability plans and practices they have.
Lastly, their responsibility towards their shareholders. J&J believes that when
they put the needs and well-being of the people they serve first, success will
follow. It is evident because of the company’s global exposure and network which
is beneficial to their shareholders.
Listening to this webinar helped me recognize J&J more. Growing up, I
only have knowledge about their bath and body care products and not about their
true purpose and the other products that they produce to take care of the people
they serve. Now, I am thinking of entering their company in order to support their
objective and to be protected by them.

Essential or Non-Essential: Verbal or Non-verbal Communication Skills in the
Time of Pandemic.
October 26, 2021
The webinar talked about the importance of communication skills in these
times of pandemic. There are various points that were discussed, especially
relating to verbal and non-verbal communication in interviews. It was stressed
that the pandemic changed the way we communicate with each other. For
example, prior to the pandemic, it is kind of offensive when you move away from
the person you are talking to, but now it is acceptable and means that you are
just protecting him/her from close contact. Furthermore, there are lots of
challenges that we commonly encounter because of the pandemic. When we are
talking to each other, we usually wear masks which somehow prevents us from
showing our emotions and feelings. Also, we experience difficulty in hearing
clearly when we are talking to someone wearing masks. Indeed, wearing face
masks and face shields are challenging in terms of expressing ourselves clearly.
Moreover, the webinar talked about some tips that we can use in order to
ace an online interview. Job interviews are now done online which is very
challenging to us, graduating students, because we are all new to this kind of
setup. Additionally, it is easier to express your feelings and emotions in person
rather than online because interviewers would only see your face down to your
shoulders and eye contact is somehow difficult to do. Hence, there are some tips
that were discussed by our speaker.

First, the use of body language. Using body language in a virtual meeting
is essential because it impacts your image. Second, learn to look into your
camera rather than looking around because it also adds value to your virtual
image or it will serve as your eye contact. Third, be prepared and dress
appropriately to show a positive impact and professionalism.
Lastly, choose your virtual background wisely because some employers
are distracted and annoyed when you are using inappropriate backgrounds.
All in all, the webinar series is relevant and significant, especially to us
graduating students, because we were able to relate and learn from the current
situation that we are facing. Online job interviews might be more challenging to
some of us but listening and learning from this kind of webinars is very helpful.

How to Write a TAMnotch Resume
September 24, 2021
In our senior year, preparing for our professional career after graduation is
important. The career and placement office organizes programs, such as student
exposures to companies and training to enhance professionalism. The webinar
entitled “How to Write a TAMnotch Resume” aims to educate students, especially
students who are currently applying for internships and who are graduating, on
how to present themselves professionally to their employer through their resume.
The webinar discussed various points and tips on making a presentable
resume. It was emphasized that your name, contact number, and email shall be
presented on the first part of your resume so that your employer would know how
to contact you immediately. Next tip is to make your resume as clear and concise
as possible. Additionally, double check possible spelling and grammatical errors
since these mistakes are significant when it is about a resume. The distinctions
between a resume and a curriculum vitae were also discussed. These few things
are some of the main points that the speaker stressed out. In conclusion, when
creating your resume, you have to be professional because you will present your
credentials to your employer.

H&M
September 7, 2021
I do not often shop for clothes but when I do, I make sure to buy from
stores that live up their company values and maintain good customer service. As
one of the well-known and trusted clothing lines in the Philippines, H&M proved
their credibility at the webinar conducted on September 7, 2021. where a few
representatives from the company explained H&M’s background and ethics.
What I liked most about their presentation is their concept of “red thread”,
which symbolizes the bond and relationship of the company’s values. I was
amazed and I found the idea really unique and clever. Additionally, I also admire
how they value their employees, customers, and the environment as they shared
the events and initiatives that they conducted promoting sustainability, fairness,
and eco-friendliness. Some of their award-winning innovations are Petit Pli,
Mestic, and Fairbrics, which particularly focused on product supportability and
environment-friendliness.
Thus, I have no regrets in trusting H&M not just because of their high-
quality products but also with how they live by their principles. I hope that more
companies would be inspired to value their values more than the profits they
earn.

PEP Talk 2: From A to Q
Times like this, we are struggling differently. With the catastrophe the
pandemic has caused, our mental well-being is at stake. We must take care of
our mental health as it is as essential as other health beings in our life. Our
mental health is a part of us which influences our behavior, emotions, and
thoughts, thus anything that may cause damage to it must be addressed. This
PEP talk took place last September 17th and was designed to raise awareness
on how to take care of our mental health, specifically, our adverse quotient.
Adverse quotient pertains to how we respond to adversity or to difficult
situations. Now that we are living under a crisis because of the Covid-19, we
must have a strong response to overcome the difficulties in our lives. During
adversity, others' initial response is to quit, but it is times like this wherein we
must stand firm and be resilient. Others might be in anguish, others may
experience hopelessness and start building a wall on their forts, but as redundant
as it seems we must stay optimistic during these certain times as it is the only
thing we can do to protect our mental well-being.
We can develop our adverse quotient in four ways. First is to acknowledge
that change is happening. Change is inevitable and we need to understand that it
is something we cannot control, but something that we can accept. Secondly, is
to own the situation. Once we have understood the situation, we can take it and
make it our own. Thirdly, we have to develop an action plan in order to address
the uncertainties in this situation. Lastly, once you’ve done all the three previous
steps is to execute your plan with perseverance. We may not control what has
happened in the past, but we are in charge of our own future. Indulging on what
we could have done will not change our present, but leading our future is a step
to our own revolution.
