RD28T Turbo Upgrade Guide – Power, Longevity, and Safety

Overview:
Upgrading the turbo on the RD28T engine can dramatically improve power output and
response, but it must be done correctly to avoid blowing the engine or causing
excessive soot and heat issues. This guide outlines key upgrade options, supporting
mods, and tuning advice.

1. Choosing the Right Turbo:


 GT2860R (or clone): Great balance of spool and power; supports 250–300 HP.
 TD04 or TD05: Slightly laggier but better top-end.
 Avoid oversized turbos: They increase lag and strain on stock components.
2. Oil and Water Lines:
 Always use braided AN lines with new banjo bolts and copper washers.
 Feed the turbo from the oil filter sandwich plate or factory banjo point.
 Water cooling is recommended for daily drivers to prevent heat soak.
3. Manifold and Downpipe:
 Use a cast or custom tubular manifold with proper flange alignment.
 Downpipe should be mandrel bent 2.5–3" with a flex joint.
 Consider ceramic coating to reduce under-hood heat.
4. Boost Control:
 Manual boost controller is simple and effective.
 Aim for 12–15 PSI safely on stock internals with supporting mods.
5. Intercooler and Piping:
