Read the given text and answer the questions that follow:
In today's age of urban expansion, super highways and corporate farming, one creature that is
often overlooked is the butterfly. The departure of butterflies is an indicator of a greater loss that
of our native landscape and the species is supports.
There are nearly 1200 different species of butterflies have been recorded in Malaysia and there
are probably 120000 moth species. The butterfly species are restricted to native wetland,
gardens, urban parks, forest fringes, open habitats and also in thick forests and jungles, in the
highlands and lowlands. When these habitats are destroyed, the population of butterflies they
supported is also destroyed. The reintroduction of natural landscape elements into urban and
suburban neighbourhoods such as butterfly gardens that are otherwise introduced species may be
the greatest contribution to ecosystem conservation.
Butterfly gardens are simply areas arranged with plants that attract butterflies. The first step in
any butterfly garden is to find out what kinds of butterflies are found in the area and what plants
will attract them. When planning a garden, it is important to choose the area that is sunny and
protected from wind. The garden can be any size or shape. To attract a wide variety of butterfly
species, it is necessary to include a diverse collection of butterflies attracting plants. Bright,
showy flowers with high nectar content are good for adult butterflies. Shrubs and succulent
plants are good for larval food.
There are proper butterfly garden etiquette. When approaching the garden, be as quiet as
possible. Once in the garden, select a sport where you can sit or stand quietly and the butterflies
will come back. Butterflies are fun to look at, but realise that they have fine and delicate scales
on their wings, and if you touch them, many of the scales could easily rub off. This could
seriously hurt the butterflies. You may take as many pictures as you wish of the butterflies but
never remove butterflies, their caterpillars, eggs, plants, flowers or any other item in the garden.
You should leave them for others to enjoy.
