PTV APAC: Transport Planning, Demand and Operational Modelling Seminar

Last August 21, 2024 around 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM, PTV APAC: Transport Planning,
Demand and Operational Modelling Seminar was conducted through Microsoft Teams and was
facilitated by the PTV group led by Mr. David NG. The seminar was about the challenges
regarding the transportation network and how the power of technology can influence and
mitigate the current issues of transportation in our society. Mr. Julian Laufer discussed “Network
Management in the Short Term” in transportation planning that there’s a strategic demand model
that must be followed to ensure the order and clarity of information that will be used in decision
making to forecast and devise a plan to meet the needs and demands of the transport sector. As
there will be a lot of challenges, he explained that the operational challenge is a cycle that must
be thoroughly studied as it begins with traffic assignment to performance and it will generate as
the operational strategy which will be used to mitigate transportation and then change the road’s
capacity. These professionals believed that the capacity of roads is one of the challenges of
transportation and a thorough investigation of network detail will be a great way to gather data.
In addition, they’ve shown the use and purpose of functional application on road intersections
which is an advanced application for transport software. These will help in identifying
constrained networks and understand better how each link of roads are connected, delayed,
constrained, etc.
For a more developed roadway network, the software model is developed with a focus on
engineering constraints and this model found a place for short term planned disruptions.
Furthermore, a lot of different personalities under the PTV group were able to present from
various countries like South Korea, China, and Singapore. Aside from transport planning, “The
Hallucination of Hole Avoidance Mathematical Optimization: A Travel Behavior Modelling
Framework Based on Causal Relationship” was discussed by Chen Xiaolong which is about
analyzing the travel behavior by using tools such as VISUM, TransCAD, Cube, and EMME.
These software will be able to create a trip generation model according to travel surveys whose
goal is to develop more precise and dependable models.

Then, another speaker named Professor Lee Seouha from TOMMs discussed the
“Mobility Concept for the Seoul Metropolitan Area” which is about the various architectural
models of a transport network such as traffic zones, bus network, and transit timetable. He also
discussed that optimizing traditional models in transportation networks might actually have some
hole which called the “hallucination of hole avoidance”. This leads to a need for a
comprehensive transportation system that integrates walking, bicycling, and public transportation
into the mobility network in a sustainable method.
Moreover, a new VISUM 2025 will be launched in October which is much better than
before and a PTV Hub will also be introduced to the public where you can store PTV files and
collaborate with other users by editing, calculating, and publishing models. This hub is quite
similar to cloud storage in which you can also start cloud computation. With the power of
technology, PTV Group was able to develop Automated Public Transport Network Design which
generates public transport networks by also integrating with scenario management. This proves
as an effective software for engineers to plan, analyze, and design infrastructures. Even though
this is an AI software, it doesn't lower the value of work of engineers as they are still the one
who decides what way or strategy is the best thing to do. Thus, the seminar was successfully
conducted by introducing modelling software that could greatly improve the transport networks
in each country.
