Maths Inspiration Trip

On Thursday 21st March, 50 students in year 12 and year 10 travelled
to Bradford St. George’s Hall for an afternoon of Maths Inspiration!
This is a national programme of interactive maths lecture shows with
speakers who present mathematics live in the context of exciting, real-
world applications.

This year, we had three speakers. Katie Steckles, famed for being a champion of Only Connect and
a writer in the New Scientist talked about the Mathematics Of Life. Highlights of her talk included
how to make a pentagon from a strip of paper, how to share a cake fairly and how to escape a
maze.

Hugh Hunt who is Professor of Engineering Dynamics and Vibration at Cambridge University then
gave a talk about Maths in a spin. He shared how he helped motorcycle racer Guy Martin attempt
to break the world speed record for riding on a fairground-style
“wall of death”. The mathematics involved in circular motion was explained clearly and was
most engaging.

The final speaker was Colin Wright who achieved a PhD from
the University of Cambridge in Combinatorics and Graph
Theory. He talked about patterns, making predictions and
counting! He also impressed us with his skills in juggling and
linked this back to patterns and counting.

The show was hosted by Helen Pilcher and she shared with us her excitement
that this April sees the emergence of both 13 year and 17 year periodical
cicadas that are due to ascend in eastern North America (an event that
happens only every 221 years).

The show finished with questions from the audience and a pi

show down! This was won by our very own student, Sanaa who
recited more digits of pi than any of the prestigious guests. In fact,
Sanaa can recite 150 digits of pi – a most impressive feat!

Sadie Bakes
We wanted to share some news about Sadie Tidswell who is in Year 12.

Sadie has run her own baking business for 4 years, known as 'Sadie Bakes'.
She has recently achieved a 5-star food hygiene rating following her Food
Safety inspection.

It is a great accomplishment for Sadie who

is 16 years old, and will allow her to further
expand her business in the future.

Young Enterprise

At the start of the Easter Holidays our Young Enterprise

team and Mrs Harker spent the day in the White Rose Centre. SquEaze had a trade stall and did
a fantastic job at selling their wares to the general public. The students were delighted to sell all
their stock and worked hard to entice customers over to their stand and adapted their approaches
effectively to at least gain increased awareness of their brand and online presence. Students were
a real credit to our school and impressed members of the public with their product and manners.

Our parent governor Mr Suryawanshi kindly came along to support the event and had this to say...

"I spent a few hours with our students and Mrs. Harker in White Rose shopping centre as part of the Young Enterprise event. I was
impressed with the innovation shown by our students in developing SquEaze. Working together collaboratively, the product design,
marketing material, packaging – everything was thoroughly thought through and executed. The students' behaviour was exemplary,
and I was so proud of the entire team who worked so hard to make the event a success and achieve good sales figures. The students
showed teamwork, good interpersonal, and entrepreneurial skills. Selling to strangers in the real world requires a lot of courage,
and our students were able to do that. It's all credit to our school
and Mrs. Harker."
