The superbly self-assured V- 6 and V- 8 engines and a powerful V- 6
diesel unit. Then there’s the suspension, as comfortable on twisting
country roads as it is on highways. Add the optional AIRMATIC DC
Air Suspension System Package,1 with the Adaptive Damping System
(ADS) – and the superb ride quality is elevated to the point where you
feel as if you are quite simply floating along the road. The standard
specification even includes 4MATIC™ permanent all-wheel drive for

every Mercedes-Benz, form follows function superbly. From its powerful,
wedge shape front end to the sleek styling lines that travel the length of
the vehicle, to its wide-set aggressive stance, it is both nimble and elegant.

The R- Class:
group travel is back in style.
The R-Class proves that elegance and practicality go together perfectly.
The secret of the spacious interior is an entirely new vehicle concept:
Unlike conventional sedans, the R-Class is not a three-box design (engine,
interior, trunk) but a two-box concept (engine, interior) in which the
seating and load areas form a single unit.

This concept is responsible for the roominess of the SUV, in which 64%
of the body length is available for the interior, creating vast amounts of
headroom and legroom. And all the occupants have window seats,
not to mention particularly good all-round visibility thanks to the raised
seating position.

Don’t be surprised if your passengers become a little possessive about the

rear seats: The second row features particularly comfortable “executive
chair” seating. The rear centre console features two cup holders and
many storage compartments, including space for the optional Rear-Seat
Entertainment System.

Ideally situated, superb views,

2.21m x 1.24m living area.
The R-Class is so accommodating that it feels like a real home away from
home. With a load compartment length of 1.98m and a width of 1.24m,
the SUV is the roomiest passenger car we have ever built. Which explains
how, with the third row seats folded down, you can easily stow six
suitcases aboard. Loading is made even more straightforward with the
EASY-PACK tailgate1 which operates electrohydraulically and can be
opened and closed by means of a remote control or a switch. And as all the
seats are individual units, it is easy to reconfigure the interior. Even with
six people aboard, the luggage compartment still offers sufficient space
for two large golf bags. As a two-seater, the R-Class offers a load capacity
of 2,407 litres up to the roof lining. Reconfiguring the interior in this way
is quick and easy: Creating a level load area is simply a matter of folding
the cushions and backrests of the second and third rows forward.

It all started with an unseen revolution. Some 47 years ago, when
Mercedes-Benz presented the first car designed in accordance with
passive safety principles, the innovations it featured – crumple zones
and the passenger safety cell – were invisible to the naked eye.

The list of safety features goes on and on. But regardless of the specific
functions of the individual features, they are all part of the Mercedes-Benz
vision of accident-free driving. It will be a while before this vision becomes
a reality, but our PRO-SAFE™ philosophy brings it a good deal closer.

During driving, the amount of stress the driver experiences is reduced

by the overall sense of comfort offered by the vehicle. At the same time,
assistance systems monitor the driving situation permanently so that the
driver can be provided with warnings and support if typical hazards arise.
Furthermore, reversible protective measures can be applied as a precaution
and the occupants can be provided with appropriate protection in the event
of an accident. And PRO-SAFE™ keeps on working after the accident.
By taking specific measures, it can prevent more serious consequences and

We keep getting safer and safer.

To support the heads of the people in the front seat in the event of a
rear- end collision, Mercedes-Benz has created NECK-PRO. When sensors
detect an impact, pre-tensioned springs bring your head restraint forward
to reduce the risk of whiplash.

As an option, your R- Class can be equipped with Active Bi-Xenon

headlamps featuring dynamic headlamp range adjustment, headlamp
washers and cornering lights.1 In vehicles equipped with the Active
Bi-Xenon headlamps, the headlamps follow the steering wheel movements,
thereby improving illumination of curves by up to 90%. The cornering
lights are triggered automatically at speeds up to 40 km / h when turning,
when the direction indicator is activated or when taking tight bends.

At the first sign of skidding, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®),

which has been specially optimized for the 4MATIC™ permanent all-wheel
drive of the R-Class, can intervene to provide improved traction. As soon
as the sensors detect a critical dynamic handling situation, braking is
applied to one or more wheels as required and the engine output may
also be adjusted.

Consider that your car connects with the road in just four places.
Mercedes-Benz has ensured that those interactions are always to the
driver’s advantage. 4MATIC™ permanent all-wheel drive with the Electronic
Traction System (4-ETS) adjusts for both dry and slippery road conditions.
Should a wheel begin to slip, the system instantly brakes that wheel,
while simultaneously directing power to the wheels with a grip on the
road. In extreme conditions, power will go to just a single wheel, if that is
what is required to keep you moving. This continuous sensing, reacting
and adjusting produces unrivalled stability, control and confidence.

Power or comfort?
Others say either, we say both.
The R500’s V-8 engine brings together all the qualities expected of
an SUV: concentrated power, comfort and exceptionally smooth running.
The three-valve per-cylinder design makes room in the combustion
chamber for two spark plugs, which ignite in phased operation
according to the load and driving style. This results in more intensive
combustion which optimizes fuel consumption and reduces exhaust
emissions. In terms of figures, this means an output of 302 hp and
maximum torque of 339 lb-ft. The R500 accelerates from 0 to 100 km /h
in 6.9 seconds.1 And, just to make sure that all this power is delivered
as comfortably as possible, our 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission
is included.

The R350 shows the sensational effect which can be achieved through
understatement. Its V-6 engine with four-valves per-cylinder and
continuous camshaft adjustment is one of the most powerful units in
its class. Its 268 hp gives it plenty of pulling power for fast acceleration
in any gear. Even in high gear, the R350’s engine delivers a relaxed
driving experience while returning good fuel economy.

A diesel engineer to fuel your enthusiasm.

When it comes to torque, the 221 hp V-6 CDI diesel engine has plenty
to say. The R320 CDI attains a figure of 398 lb-ft. It’s all thanks to
a further enhancement of the common-rail technology with direct
injection and a turbocharger with a variable nozzle turbine. The R320
CDI combines high performance with low fuel consumption and low
exhaust emissions, the latter being due in part to the diesel particulate
filter which is standard with the CDI engine. Unlike conventional systems,
this filter operates without fuel additives, a factor which helps deliver
high performance while keeping CO2 emissions low. Up to 95% of the
soot particles can be removed from the exhaust gases.
