DEATH OF A HEN
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you
will be saved—you and your household." (Acts
16:31)

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no

other name under heaven given to mankind by
which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)
30 YEARS < 3 YEARS < 3 DAYS:
“THE CROSS & RESURRECTION”
The “Three Days” are called the Easter Triduum.
The Triduum, the last three days of Holy Week, is
the celebration of the Christian Passover.
In essence, these “Three Days” comprises the heart
of Christian faith and of the Gospel message:
_________________________________________.
THE NAME, JESUS CHRIST
Jesus is the Greek version of the Hebrew name
Joshua. The name Jesus means ‘The Lord Will Save.’
The word Christ is a sacred title, not an ordinary
name; it is derived from the Greek Christos, and it is
identical with its Hebrew equivalent Messiah
(Meshiakh), meaning ____________________.

The name Jesus Christ really means "Jesus the

Messiah," or "Jesus the Anointed.”
The followers of Jesus became known as “Christians,”
meaning the ____________________.
HISTORICAL JESUS AND BEYOND
Historically, Jesus was born in Bethlehem and then lived
as an infant in Egypt before growing up and living in
Nazareth until He was thirty years old. In the early days of
His ministry, which lasted only about three years, He
moved to Capernaum, and at the end of it He was
arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, tried by Pontius
Pilate, and executed at Golgotha. Three days later He
was resurrected, and forty days after that He ascended to
Heaven.
“For it is with your heart that you believe and are
justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess
your faith and are saved.” (Romans 10:10)
Concerning salvation, first and foremost is ___________.
Believers study to understand Jesus and

________________________________________.
Crucifixion is “the most cruel and disgusting penalty” according to Cicero; It
is “the most wretched of deaths” according to the Jewish writer Josephus.
“You must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury
him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under
God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is
giving you as an inheritance.” (Deuteronomy 21:23)
“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the
world.” (Galatians 6:14)
“For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus
Christ and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2)
“But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and
foolishness to Gentiles.” (1 Corinthians 1:23)
WHY STUDY THE CROSS?
#1. To know salvation and how to live a saved life.
#2. To know true love and how to love.

#3. To know the Gospel.

The love of the cross and the resurrection of eternal life is the core message
of the Gospel of God. We should pay attention to its order: first is the cross
and then follows the resurrection.
#4. To fix the misconceptions about God.
Bonhoeffer said: “Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of our Church. We are fighting
today for costly grace. ... Cheap grace means the justification of sin without the
justification of the sinner. … Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace
without the Cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
WHY STUDY THE CROSS?
“You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings.” (1
Corinthians 7:23)
“You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are
witnesses of this.” (Acts 3:15)
“Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the
head, legs and internal organs.” (Exodus 12:9)
GOD’S PLAN FOR THE WORLD
“Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he
said.” (Matthew 21:37)
“For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him
who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of
all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:38-39)

Jesus’ food (sustenance) was ____________________.
But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about." Then
his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"
"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his
work.” (John 4:32-34)
TWO DISCIPLES GOING BACK TO
EMMAUS
Jesus had already been resurrected and was living.
Downcast and despaired, they failed to see the living
Jesus though He was walking alongside with them.
JESUS EXPLAINED HIS OWN
DEATH
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he
explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures
concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)
Jesus explained to them the records of Moses and the
Prophets. Moses signifies ____________and the Prophets
mean ____________________. Jesus explained to them the
law and the prophecies, in other words, the Old Testament.
Some of the primary teachings on the death of Jesus were
from ___________________ from the Law and
___________________ from the Prophets.
The Day of Atonement (Leviticus 23:27-28), Hebrew Yom
Kippur, was the most holy day of all the Israelite feasts and
festivals in the Hebrew calendar.

was for us, for our sake, in our behalf.
JESUS EXPLAINED HIS OWN
DEATH
“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered
him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was
pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the
punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we
are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned
to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He
was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was
led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is
silent, so he did not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment he
was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut
off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he
was punished.” (Isaiah 53:4-8)
“Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide
the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of
many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isaiah 53:12)
Jesus was_________________________________________________.
THEY OPENED THEIR EYES
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it
and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they
recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each
other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on
the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:30-32)
Jesus is ____________________ (John 6:35).
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's
friends.” (John 15:13)
There was a dramatic change between verses 16 and 31:
“But they were kept from recognizing him.” (Luke 24:16)
“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he
disappeared from their sight.” (Luke 24:31)
As the disciples came to know ____________________, they could see the
resurrected Christ.
“They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the
Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true!
The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” (Luke 24:33-34)
OLIVET; BETHANY
“When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and
crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove,
and he and his disciples went into it.” (John 18:1)
“Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples
followed him.“ (Luke 22:39)
There were two very important bases of Jesus’ ministry: one was
______________ and the other was ____________________________.
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud
hid him from their sight. (Acts 1:9)
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of
Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. (Acts 1:12)
“When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his
hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them
and was taken up into heaven.” (Luke 24:50-51)
OLIVET; BETHANY
“While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known
as Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an
alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured
on his head as he was reclining at the table.” (Matthew
26:6-7)
“Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany,
where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the
dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha
served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the
table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard,
an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and
wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with
the fragrance of the perfume.” (John 12:1-3)

JUDAS LED THOSE TO ARREST
JESUS
“Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place,
because Jesus had often met there with his
disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a
detachment of soldiers and some officials from
the chief priests and Pharisees. They were
carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.” (John
18:2-3)
JESUS WALKED INTO THE CROSS
Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to
him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you
want?" "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am
he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was
standing there with them.) When Jesus said, "I am
he," they drew back and fell to the ground. Again
he asked them, "Who is it you want?" And they
said, "Jesus of Nazareth." "I told you that I am
he," Jesus answered. "If you are looking for me,
then let these men go." (John 18:4-8)
JESUS IS VERE DEUS AND VERE
HOMO; SON OF GOD AND SON OF MAN
“He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he
began to be deeply distressed and troubled.” (Mark 14:33)
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not
my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42)
Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with
sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch
with me.” (Matthew 26:38)
“And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his
sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” (Luke
22:44)
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has
ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold
firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high
priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses,
but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just
as we are—yet he did not sin.” (Hebrews 4:14-15)
JESUS IS VERE DEUS AND VERE
HOMO; SON OF GOD AND SON OF MAN
Docetism (Greek, "dokeo" means "to seem") taught that Jesus only
appeared to have a body and He was not really the God Incarnate. The
denial of a true incarnation meant that Jesus did not truly suffer on the
cross and that He did not rise from the dead.
“This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.
This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and
even now is already in the world.” (1 John 4:2-3)
“I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus
Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such
person is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (2 John 1:7)
The Council of Chalcedon was summoned in A.D. 451 and condemned
Docetism and promulgated the Definition of the Union of the Divine and
Human Natures in the Person of Christ. In carefully balanced phrases the
Definition established that "one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ" is
"at once truly God and truly man (Latin, vere deus, vere homo).
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily
form.” (Colossians 2:9)
KIDRON VALLEY
“When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his
disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the
other side there was an olive grove, and he and
his disciples went into it.” (John 18:1)
FAITH IN LOVE LEADS TRUE
COURAGE, OBEDIENCE
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions
with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he
was heard because of his reverent submission. (Hebrews 5:7)
Though Jesus was deeply distressed and troubled in the beginning, His conclusion
was let your will be done, not mine. This is His self-denial and self-abasement. This
is essentially ________________.
"If you love me, you will obey what I command.” (John 14:15)
"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from
me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." (Mark 14:36)
“Abba Father” – this is what Jesus called God. Abba is in Aramaic, “father.” Jesus’
relationship with God is very intimate, not stoic or merely positional. It is what a
loving father has with his son and the son who lives securely and comfortably in that
love. (Glenn T. Stanton from the Gospel Coalition)
When Jesus called God “Abba Father,” it must mean ____________________.
This is how Jesus called God when he prayed in private in Gethsemane.
PETER’S COURAGE VS. JESUS’
COURAGE
“This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have
not lost one of those you gave me." Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew
it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's
name was Malchus.)” (John 18:9, 10)
Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the
Father has given me?" (John 18:11)
“Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The
words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father,
living in me, who is doing his work.” (John 14:10)
God and Jesus were no longer ‘two’ but perfect ‘one’ in absolute love.
PETER’S COURAGE VS. JESUS’
COURAGE

The Father and the Son by Ginturn H. Tran

The cross is the victory of ____________________________________.
"You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter.
He replied, "I am not." (John 18:17)
“As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of
his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." One of the high
priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged
him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?" Again Peter denied it, and
at that moment a rooster began to crow.” (John 18:25-27)
JESUS’ NEW COMMAND—CARRY ONE
ANOTHER’S CROSS AND FORGIVE!
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As
I have loved you, so you must love one
another.” (John 13:34)
“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you
will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
CHRIST LIVES IN ME
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer
live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in
the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians
2:20)
