3/ Relative Clauses

Defining Relative Clauses Non-defining Relative Clauses

A defining relative clause gives essential information A non-defining relative clause gives extra, non-

• who → Refers to people.
• whose → possession ~ sở hữu
o The red backpack over there, whose owner is John, costs 700,000 VND.
o This is the author whose books have been best-sellers.
o I met a coffee manager whose best friend is so into me.
• whom → used for people (formal, especially in written English).
o The person whom I spoke to was very helpful. (Note: “whom” is often replaced by “who” in
casual speech.)
• which → things/animals
• that → people/things
• where → place
• when → time
