Topic: Digital world

Issue: cyberbullying
Research question: How does cyberbullying
affect the mental health on the youth?

Cyberbullying affects the mental health of

young people all around the world. When
kids and teens are bullied online, they often
feel anxious, sad, and alone, no matter
where they live. Since the internet connects
people from different countries, hurtful
messages and online bullying can spread
very fast. Many young people feel unsafe
even when they are at home because
cyberbullying can happen at any time, day
or night. This constant fear and stress can
cause low self-esteem, poor grades in
school, and in very serious cases, self-harm
or even thoughts of suicide.
Cyberbullying can also make young people
feel like they have no one to talk to, which
can make their mental health even worse. It
can ruin friendships, break trust, and make
them afraid to use the internet. Some may
even stop taking part in activities they used
to enjoy. The rise of social media, texting,
and online games has made it easier for
bullies to target others. Because of this,
cyberbullying is now a global problem that
needs urgent action. There is a big need for
more awareness, better support systems
like counsellors and help groups, stronger
rules to stop online bullying, and more
kindness and respect on the internet.
Course of action
To stop cyberbullying and provide young
people's mental health protection,
prevention and assistance programs must
be in place. Schools should have very
comprehensive anti-bullying initiatives and
have counselors who are available and
accessible to students. Parents should also
communicate openly with their children and
monitor their online behavior in the proper
way, encouraging them to report if they are
bullied online. Peers also play an important
role, which is to support the victims and
stand against bullying behavior when they
witness them happening. Further, stricter
laws and policies must be enacted to hold
cyberbullies accountable, and social media
companies must be urged to intensify
reporting.
Last, it is only through a combined effort by
the families, schools, tech companies, and
governments that we can combat
cyberbullying. We must encourage
education on respectful behavior online and
mental health awareness far and wide. By
being proactive and offering strong support
systems, we can reduce the rate of
cyberbullying and safeguard the mental
health of countless young people today so
that the online community becomes an
improved, more inclusive space for all.
