Lila stood before the clock, heart pounding in her chest. Could she really change the past?
She
had always felt trapped in her own mistakes, unable to move forward. But now, standing before
this strange artifact, the idea of re-writing history seemed both thrilling and terrifying.
“What would happen if I used it?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Duncan hesitated. “The possibilities are endless. But you cannot know what the future holds. A
single change could ripple out and affect everything. Are you sure you want to risk it?”
Lila’s mind raced. What if she could go back and see her mother one last time? Or make amends
with her old friend, Ben, who she hadn’t spoken to in years?
The clock’s hands ticked, though no one had touched it. The sound echoed in her mind, growing
louder.
She took a deep breath. “I need to know. I have to try.”
Duncan nodded gravely. “Very well. But remember, I warned you. Once you turn the dial, there
is no going back.”
He handed her a small key, a delicate thing made of silver and etched with symbols she didn’t
recognize. “This will unlock the mechanism. But be sure you are ready. The clock will show you
the past—but it will also show you what might have been.”
Lila’s fingers trembled as she reached for the key. She didn’t know if she was ready, but the
desire for a second chance, for a glimpse into a different world, was overwhelming.

Lila knelt in front of the clock, the key heavy in her palm. She inserted it into a small lock at the
base of the pedestal. The mechanism clicked, and the face of the clock shimmered, its hands
beginning to move in reverse, slowly at first, then faster.
Suddenly, she was no longer in Duncan’s shop. The world around her dissolved, and she was
pulled into a different place—her childhood home.
It was morning, and sunlight streamed through the kitchen window. She was there, sitting at the
table with her mother, just as she had done countless times before.
