A General Requirements

The Vendor shall use only Saudi Aramco approved products. Approved
SAES-H-201,
Product is a coating material that has been approved by the RUS as

meeting the requirements of the applicable APCS or SAMSS. Only

approved products are allowed for use in Saudi Aramco jobs.

Internal FBE powder shall meet the requirements of 09-SAMSS-091 SAES-H-201,

Robotic system shall be used for the inspection, surface preparation SAES-H-201,

and coating application of internal FBE girth weld. Para. 7.4

Application of FBE coating shall be strictly in accordance with the


approved Vendor’s application procedure. FBE materials and method of SAES-H-201,

application and equipment to be used shall be specified in this Para. 8.1.1

IInternal coatings used in potable water service must meet Food and
SAES-H-002,
Drugs Administration (FDA), National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) or

equivalent requirements for suitability for use in contact with drinking
water. The certificate shall be renewed every 5 years

The coating system has been selected for specific service from the

A Pre-Production Trial (PPT) must be conducted at the start of each


shift to verify the correct functioning of the used equipment. The PPT SAES-H-201,
A9 should be conducted on a spool similar to the pipes to be coated. Tests Para. 8.1.6
in SAES-H-201, tables 2 and 3 shall be conducted by the Vendor and
the result shall be shared with Saudi Aramco inspector.

Personnel involved in protective coating activities has been qualified SAEP-316,

and certified to perfom their task. Para. 5.1

B In-Process Inspection of Internal FBE Coating

During periods of bad weather (rain, high winds, etc.) cleaning and
SAES-H-201,
B1 coating operations will only proceed if protective canopies are used to

the satisfaction of the Saudi Aramco Inspector.

As soon as surface preparation is completed, the area to be coated


shall be cleaned of any deleterious matter by blowing with clean, dry,
oil-free compressed air. SAES-H-201,

The area to be coated shall then be immediately heated to a Para. 8.3.2
temperature in accordance with the Powder Manufacturer's
recommendation using induction heating coil.

Application of phenolic primer prior to the application of FBE is carried


out using a machine to ensure that the travel of application is constant
SAES-H-002,
B3 and that the DFT will not exceed 25 microns (One mil) in all areas.
Para. 5.2.3
Note : One mil thickness is exceeded if the “peaks” of steel substrate
are no longer visible.

SAES-H-201,
Preheating shall be accomplished by induction heating coils.

As soon as the correct metal temperature has been reached, the


induction coil shall be removed from the welded joint area and the

manufacturer datasheet.

The machine shall apply powder to a uniform rate, to a correct width


centered on the girth weld, to the coating thickness specified Table-5, in
the least number of passes possible as per Table 5 . SAES-H-201,

Dirt or other deleterious foreign material shall not contaminate the SAES-H-201,

C Final Inspection Visual Check or Video Camera:

Cameras fitted on the crawling machine shall be used during the

C1 inspection of internally coated pipeline with diameters from 8" and

The finished coating shall have a uniform, glossy appearance and be SAES-H-201,
C2 free of defects such as holidays, fish eyes, lumps, dry spray, sags, and Para 9.2.4

For accessible internal girth weld coating, the quality of cure shall be
checked on the first 5 joints of the job and every 20 joints thereafter, by
maintaining a MEK soaked pad in contact with the coating surface for SAES-H-201,

one minute and then rubbing vigorously for 15 seconds. Para. 9.2.3
There shall be no softening of the coating or substantial color removal
from the coating.

For un-accessible internal girth weld coating, conduct the cure test as Para. 9.2.3

specified in SAES-H-201, paragraph 8.1.6 (This SAIC, item A9) &
Para. 8.1.6

Coating adhesion test is conducted as follows:


A) Using a sharp knife with a narrow width blade, make two,
approximately 13-mm long incisions through to the metal substrate to
form an X in accordance with ASTM D6677.

B) Starting at the intersection of the X, attempt to force the coating from
Para. 9.4.1
C6 the steel substrate with the knife point

C) Refusal of the coating to peel constitutes a PASS.
Para. 9.4.2
D) Partial or complete adhesion failure between the
coating and the metal substrate constitutes a failure. Cohesive failure
caused by voids in the coating leaving a honeycomb structure on the
specimen surface also constitutes failure.

If the coating fails adhesion test adjacent field girth weld areas shall
also be tested until acceptable coatings are found on both sides of the
defective coating.
SAES-H-201,
C6 The defective coatings shall all be completely removed and the areas

recoated. At least one of the repaired areas shall be re-inspected, and
the subsequent inspection frequency shall be as given in SAES-H-201,
Para 9.4.3 (as stated in this SAIC, item# C7 below)

The Adhesion test is performed once every hour. When three


SAES-H-201,
C7 consecutive tests are successful, the frequency shall be reduced to
Para. 9.4.3
once every two hours.

D Dry Film Thickness (DFT) measurement & Holiday Testing

Thickness checks shall be made on each coated weld joint using an


approved, correctly calibrated dry film thickness gauge (e.g., Microtest, SAES-H-201,

Elcometer or equivalent). The instrument shall be calibrated in Para. 9.2.2
accordance with SSPC-PA2.

A minimum number of 8 DFT readings shall be taken on each field joint


coating, 4 readings in each side, to verify compliance with the thickness
requirement in Table-5. SAES-H-201,

All holidays, imperfections, and damaged areas are carefully


identified with a waterproof marker. All markings shall be sufficiently
distant from the area to be repaired to allow surface preparation and SAES-H-201,

repair coating. This procedure is applicable for accessible internal
coating.

E Repairs

All holidays, imperfections, and damaged areas are carefully identified SAES-H-201,

Girth welds showing more than 3 holidays shall be completely blasted SAES-H-201,

The Pipe surface to be recoated shall be cleaned to remove all dirt and
damaged or disbonded coating using abrasive blasting or other
approved and suitable means. SAES-H-201,

The edges of the original coatings shall be "feathered out" Para. 9.5.2
approximately 50 mm around the specific area to be
coated, and all dust wiped off before applying the patch coating.

To repair holidays in an accessible internal girth weld coating, two part


SAES-H-201,
E4 epoxy should be used in accordance with the coating manufacturer’s
Para. 9.5.4
requirement.

Patch-up coating is applied using materials & methods specified in the Approved Coating

To repair holidays in un-accessible internal girth weld FBE coatings,


use the cleaning machine to lightly abrade the existing girth weld
coating for band width of 200 mm (8 inches) to create enough
roughness, about 1.0 mil, for the adhesion of FBE powder coating. The SAES-H-201,

coating shall be inspected for holidays and thickness. If a holiday is Para 9.5.3
detected, the field joint should be cut out to determine the cause. Cold
cutting method shall be used to prevent damaging the internal pipe
coating. Flame cutting is not allowed.
