SPICES INDUSTRY IN INDIA- AN OVERVIEW

Spices are very important and essential for adding and enhancing flavor, taste, and

Rajasthan are major states producing varieties of spices.
The industry is anticipated to foresee considerable growth, during both recession and

these flavours is expected to open new opportunities in the recent future. Rising health
concerns are making the customers explore their remedial nature, which is anticipated to
propel the market growth.
The increase in demand for seasonings to be used in overseas cuisines such as continental,

varied climate each of its state produces some spice or the other. No wonder why spices are
used so extensively for cooking in India. Not only in India but also in some other countries
spices are considered to be of great use.
Spices are natural plant products that are a seed, fruit, root, bark, or other plant
substance primarily used for flavouring, colouring or preserving food. Spices take an
important place in common man’s life right from the kitchen and medicinal uses in homes.
As India is blessed with a varied climate each of its states produce some spice or other. India
is also known as the ‘Land of Spices’. The major spices exported by India are turmeric
(10%), cumin (10%), coriander (9.5%), fenugreek (4.2%), peppers (4%) and others (19%).
In the present time, humans are concerned about immunity. Nature gave us food and
medicine stores, but we could not use that gift today. In fact, food is the only medicine.
According to Hindu scriptures, excellent and scientifically made food makes a healthy body.
The food style or habit of people is changing to a greater extent as they are moving towards
spicy food because of good taste and aroma. Indian food has traditionally been rich in spices.
There is no food in which spices are not used. The use of spices has been practiced in the
Indian subcontinent since time immemorial and is still relevant today due to the importance
of the spice and its therapeutic properties. States like Kerala, Punjab, Gujarat, Manipur,
Mizoram and Uttar Pradesh are considered as the hub for growing spices.

2.4 Challenges in Spices Industry:

Indian spice farmers have low productivity compared to their counterparts in other
countries. This is due to a number of factors, including the use of outdated farming practices,
lack of access to irrigation, and poor infrastructure. The Indian spice industry is largely
unorganised, with a large number of small and marginal farmers. This makes it difficult for
the industry to adopt modern technologies and practices, and to compete with more organised
players in the global market. There is a lack of uniformity in quality standards for spices in
India. This makes it difficult for Indian spice exporters to meet the requirements of
international buyers. There have been a number of food safety concerns raised about Indian
spices in recent years. This has led to some countries imposing stricter import regulations on
Indian spices. India faces competition from other major spice producers, such as China,
Vietnam, and Indonesia. These countries have lower labour costs and are able to produce
spices at a lower price. Indian spice farmers need to adopt modern farming practices, such as
the use of irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides. This will help to improve productivity and
quality.

9
An Organizational Study On “Sri Maruthi Pulvarisers Pvt Ltd, Chitradurga”

The Indian spice industry needs to be more organized. This can be done by forming
farmer producer organizations (FPOs) and other collectives. FPOs can help farmers to get
better prices for their produce, and to access modern technologies and practices. The Indian
spice industry needs to improve its quality standards. This can be done by setting up grading
and certification systems, and by educating farmers about good agricultural practices (GAP).
Indian spice companies need to compete on value-added products. This means moving away
from the production of bulk commodities and focusing on the production of high-quality,
branded products.

5.2 History of the Product:
Early civilizations in India used spices like turmeric, black pepper, and cardamom for
both culinary and medicinal purposes. Trade with Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Arabia
introduced these spices to other parts of the world. The Indus Valley Civilization (3300-1300
BC) cultivated several spices like sesame and mustard, highlighting their early significance in
Indian cuisine. The arrival of the Mughals in the 16th century brought about a lavish style of
cooking, incorporating Persian and Central Asian influences. This led to the creation of new
spice blends, often combining Indian spices with nuts, dried fruits, and aromatic herbs.
Garam masala, a warm spice blend commonly used in North Indian cuisine, is
believed to have originated during this period. European exploration and trade routes
increased the demand for Indian spices, further solidifying their global significance. The
Portuguese, Dutch, and British established trade monopolies and heavily influenced the spice
trade, shaping global culinary traditions. As trade flourished and cultural exchange increased,
various regions in India developed their own distinct masala blends. These regional variations
reflected the availability of local spices, culinary preferences, and cultural influences.
Examples include Garam masala in North India, Sambar powder in South India, and Pinch
phorone in Bengal. Today, masalas are ubiquitous in Indian cuisine, forming the backbone of
countless dishes. They are readily available commercially, making it easier for people to
explore different Flavors. The masala story continues to evolve, with innovations like pre-
mixed spice blends for specific dishes and fusion cuisines incorporating masalas into global
culinary experiences.

opportunities, and threats that are to be expected in a business. It means that the marketing
environment (internal and external to the organization) is looked at. It is one of the best tools
to conduct the internal and external analysis for any company.

returns market beating results; it must then decide how to use those results to attract new
investors.

business needs to improve to remain competitive: things like higher-than-industry average
turnover, high levels of debt, an inadequate supply chain or lack of capital.
 Limited online presence: The company's website design appears outdated, and
their social media engagement seems minimal, hindering online visibility and
brand awareness.
 Unavailability of financial data: The lack of publicly available financial
information makes it difficult to assess their financial health and market share
compared to competitors.
 Limited marketing efforts: Their focus might be on traditional marketing
channels, potentially missing out on reaching a wider audience through digital

technology, the extent of its implementation and its impact on efficiency or
product features might be unclear.
 Lack of innovation: Information readily available suggests limited emphasis on
publicly showcasing advancements or innovations in technology or product
development.
6.3 Opportunities:
Refer to favourable external factors that an organization can use to give it a
competitive advantage. For example, a car manufacturer may be able to export its cars
into a new market, increasing sales and markets share, if tariffs in a country are
substantially reduced – the "opportunity" in this case. Huge infrastructure demand.
 Growing market: The global pulverizing machines market is projected to grow,
presenting an opportunity for Maruthi Pulvarisers to expand its market share.
 Digital transformation: Embracing digital marketing, e-commerce, and online

One of the major issues challenging the growth of this industry is the fact that
majority of the casters are small business firms, they are not positioned to perform research
necessary to remain competitive.
 Competition: The market is likely competitive, with established players and
potential new entrants vying for market share.
 Economic slowdown: Economic downturns could impact potential customer
demand and investment in machinery.
 Rising raw material costs: Fluctuations in raw material prices could affect
production costs and profitability.

developed this model, Tom Peter and waterman, have been consultants at McKinsey and co
at that time. They Publisher their 7S Model in their article “Structure is not Organization”
