1.
Find a Safe Location
Pull over to a flat, stable, and safe place away from traffic. Turn on your hazard
lights.
2. Apply the Parking Brake
Ensure the vehicle is stationary and secure.
3. Place Wheel Wedges
Put wheel wedges (or heavy objects) in front of or behind the tires to prevent rolling.
4. Get Your Tools Ready
You’ll need a spare tire, jack, lug wrench, and the vehicle owner’s manual.
5. Remove the Hubcap or Wheel Cover
If your car has one, pry it off to access the lug nuts.
6. Loosen the Lug Nuts
Use the lug wrench to turn the nuts counterclockwise just enough to break
resistance. Don’t remove them yet.
7. Raise the Vehicle with the Jack
Position the jack under the car frame near the flat tire and raise the vehicle until the
tire is off the ground.
8. Remove the Lug Nuts and Flat Tire
Take off the lug nuts completely and then remove the flat tire.
9. Mount the Spare Tire
Line up the spare tire with the lug bolts and push it into place.
10.Tighten the Lug Nuts by Hand
Screw the lug nuts back on by hand, tightening as much as possible.
11.Lower the Vehicle
Use the jack to lower the vehicle until the tire touches the ground, but don’t put full
weight on it yet.
12.Fully Tighten the Lug Nuts
Use the lug wrench to securely tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
13.Lower the Car Completely and Replace the Hubcap
Lower the vehicle fully and put the hubcap back on if it fits.
14.Check the Tire Pressure
Make sure the spare tire is properly inflated. If it’s a “donut” (temporary spare), drive
to a repair shop soon.
