OVERVIEW
South Shields Marine School offers courses for marine engineers wishing to prepare for the EOOW IAMI exams to cover the
following examinable subject areas:
Group 1
MCA IAMI Science A & B
Group 2
MCA EOOW Control
Workshop
IAMI EK & Oral Preparation
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To understand exactly which courses you need to study on the EOOW programme you will need either an Action plan or a Letter
of Assessment. Processing time for this is usually 6-8 weeks.
Experienced Seafarer rating to EOOW
Before applying for the EOOW course you will need to apply to the college for a letter of acceptance to prove your eligibility for
the programme as detailed in MSN1857 (M+F).

When applying to the college you will need to send in copies of your sea service testimonials for a total of 24 months together
with copy of your passport, medical certificate, watch rating certificate and all STCW certificates as listed in MSN1857.
Alternative Route for Qualified Engineers and Engineering Graduates
Before applying for the EOOW course you will need to apply to the college for a written action plan as detailed in MIN 511 (M).

When applying to the college you will need to send in copies of your award with its associated transcript.
If subjects such as thermodynamics and control cannot be identified as individual modules but are included in a module such as
mechanical sciences then you should also send the syllabus or other document listing the module content. Details can be found

REMOTE LEARNING
South Shield Marine School is now offering exciting and flexible new options for the Science A & B, Control Engineering* and
IAMI EK & Oral prep elements of this programme.
This will consist of the entire course that is taught at South Shields Marine School being available to attend remotely. Our
experienced lecturing staff will be using wireless microphones in class along with sharing their computer screen and PowerPoint
presentations, in addition to a webcam being fixed at the white board for any handwritten notes, descriptions and diagrams our
lecturers may wish to add to their sessions.
Remote students will be able to interact with the lecturer as normal and ask any questions they may have via Microsoft Teams
and will receive our full support throughout the programme as they usually would on site with us at our campus.
The Online teaching will be run as pre-arranged lectures where students can use the chat function, to interact, post questions
and comments. Students will be able to use Microsoft Teams to collaborate, post information or ask lecturers for assistance
outside of lecture time. Have access to MOODLE our student learning platform which contains our Management Level course
notes, industry guidance and instructional videos. *Please note: If studying Control Engineering remotely, a part of the course
will be missed due to a small practical section.

Please Note: for applicants wishing to study Workshop, IAMI EK, Control - Workshop breaks for two weeks for IAMI EK then
breaks one week for Control and will then return to Workshop to finish.
ATTENDANCE
To complete the course, you require 80% attendance, therefore Students are expected to attend all live teaching sessions where
possible. Please take this into consideration when enrolling on this course as all lessons will be run UK time and you will be
expected to attend the live sessions regardless of time difference.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Pre course checks
Before applying for the EOOW Programme, you will be required to apply for either the Action Plan or Letter of Assessment if you
currently do not have one.
Please complete the enclosed application form and return it to the college together with the payment shown on the form and
copy documents to mmeng@tynecoast.ac.uk .
All certificate copies should have at least 6 months validity when applying and if the qualification is issued outside the EU you
will need to send a copy of your NARIC Cert. This does not mean you will be exempt from the Science A & B course or exam. You
will need to apply to the IAMI Exemption service for this iamiexemption@hotmail.co.uk
Already have Action Plan / Letter of Assessment
When you know which courses are needed after receiving your action plan or letter of assessment and have decided which
course date you wish to attend, please complete the enclosed application form and return it to the college together with the
payment shown on the form and copy documents. If you require Steam, please ensure this is selected on the application form.
If a place is available on the course you have chosen, a letter of acceptance will be issued for those learners requiring a visa to
attend on campus.
*Application cut off dates are 8 weeks prior to the course commencement for those learners who require a visa (please see cut
off dates on previous page). For remote learners and UK learners, the cut off date for applications is 2 weeks prior to the course
commencement date. Please note: the cut-off date may be extended to an additional 2 weeks for the college Christmas closure
(please see cut off dates on previous page).
