Host: Welcome to our program! Today we have Jamil Zaki, professor of psychology at Stanford
University and author of The War for Kindness. He joins us to talk about empathy, its advantages
and disadvantages, and how we can develop it. Welcome, Jamil!
Jamil Zaki: Thank you very much! It's a pleasure to be here and talk about this important topic.
1. Host: To begin, how would you define empathy and why is it so relevant in our lives?
Jamil Zaki: Empathy is our ability to understand and share the emotions of others. It allows us to
connect with other people, strengthen our relationships, and build more cooperative societies. In
an increasingly polarized world, empathy is key to fostering understanding and reducing conflict.
2. Host: It sounds essential. But what are the concrete benefits of being an empathetic
person?
Zaki: Being empathetic helps us in many ways. For example, it improves our interpersonal
relationships because it allows us to better understand those around us. It also makes us more
effective in teamwork and conflict resolution. From a psychological perspective, empathy can also
increase our sense of purpose and well-being, as it makes us feel more connected to others.
3. Host: Interesting. But could there be downsides to being overly empathetic?
Jamil Zaki: Yes, definitely. Although empathy is valuable, too much can lead to emotional burnout.
This is common in healthcare or social work professionals, who feel the suffering of others deeply
and can experience what we call "compassion fatigue." Furthermore, if not balanced with a
rational mindset, empathy can lead us to make biased decisions, favoring those we feel most
sympathy for rather than acting fairly and equitably.
4. Host: That's a very valid point. Now, is it possible to develop empathy, or is it a quality
we are simply born with?
Jamil Zaki: The good news is that empathy can be trained and strengthened. Studies have shown
that exposing ourselves to diverse perspectives, reading literature that connects with people
different from us, and practicing active listening can increase our empathic capacity. It's also key to
step outside our comfort zone and make a conscious effort to understand people with different
life experiences than our own.
5. Host: That's inspiring! Finally, what practical advice would you give to someone who wants to
be more empathetic in their daily lives?
Jamil Zaki: First, practice curiosity about others. Ask questions and listen carefully before judging.
Second, put yourself in other people's shoes, even when you disagree with them. And third,
remember that empathy is not just a feeling, but an action: you can demonstrate it through small
gestures of kindness, support, and understanding in your daily life.
Host: Great advice! Thank you so much, Jamil, for sharing your knowledge about empathy.
Jamil Zaki: Thank you! I hope this conversation helps more people develop their empathy and
build a more understanding world.
