 Calendar is a way of showing the relationship Year: A year is of 365 days or 366 days or 12
between day, month and year. months. There are two types of years- (i) ordinary
Pope Gregory fixed the birth date of Jesus Christ year and (ii) leap year
as 1 January 1 and started the 'calendar' from that 
day. Under this, he fixed 365 days for the year and (i) (ii)
divided it into 12 months. Its use started in the British (i) Ordinary year: A year which is not exactly divisible
Empire in 1752, which continues even today. by '4' is called an ordinary year. It has a total of 365
days.
(i)

Remember :-
In an ordinary year, February has 28 days.
(ii) Leap Year: A year which is exactly divisible by 4 is
called a leap year. It has a total of 366 days.

 Days:- The number of days is 7 which we usually


know by seven names such as Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and (ii)
Saturday.
 Remember :-
February in a leap year has 29 days.
The last day of the year is the same as its first day i.e. if
1st January is Thursday, then 31st December of
Months: The number of months is 12 which are that year will also be Thursday and 1st January of
usually known as January, February, March, April, the next year will be Friday. If 1st January of a leap

Remember :-

'400' is called century year. Ex- 1200, 1600... Century Questions based on original calendar- Before solving

a leap year has 52 weeks and 2 extra days. 


 The last day of a century cannot be Tuesday, Thursday or
Saturday but can be Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

 The first day of a century can be Monday, Tuesday,


Thursday or Saturday.
