Job Summary
All principal duties are usually undertaken under the direct, local and distant supervision
of a Consultant in Critical Care and/or Consultant Anaesthetist at Southport and Ormskirk
Hospitals. The Critical Care Unit at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals consists of 5-
funded level 3 and 6 level 2 beds. The resident medical cover is provided by both
anaesthetic and non-anaesthetic personnel, including medical and ACCS trainees,
Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs) and Clinical Fellows.
The post has daytime, night-time and weekend resident duties, supporting the non-
anaesthetic resident rota on the critical care unit at Southport and Formby District
General Hospital. In addition, opportunities can be provided to participate in local quality
improvement (QI) projects and/or personal development activities (e.g. undertaking
sessions in theatre or other clinical areas of interest)
Key Responsibilities and duties of the post
Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS trust is a recently formed
organisation, which brought together St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust and
Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals NHS Trust. One of the Critical Care Units is
located at Southport and Formby District General Hospital. The appointee will
participate in the non-anaesthetic resident rota, providing support to assess and
managed critically ill patients who require high dependency (level 2) and/ or intensive
(level 3) care. Although the duties will be principally based on the Southport site, the
appointee may be occasionally expected to work on the Ormskirk site. In it not
anticipated that travel to other sites within the trust is expected within the role.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
1. Participate as a member of the team supporting the non-anaesthetic resident rota
on the critical care unit at Southport and Formby District General Hospital
2. Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research activity
within the department at S&O
3. Support the S&O department in making the most efficient use of the resources
available, thus be prepared to work flexibly and deputise, if appropriate, for absent
colleagues and undertake additional duties in occasional emergencies or
unforeseen circumstances
4. Be available, exceptionally, for irregular commitments outside the normally
rostered duties, which are essential for the safety and continuity of patient care.
5. Be familiar with and comply with the principles expected by the GMC, as outlined
in “Good Medical Practice”. Thus, agree to maintain their professional
responsibilities, including full and active participation in the trust appraisal
process.

Southport and Formby District General Hospital has 5 major theatres, an Accident
and Emergency Department, an Intensive Care / Coronary Care/ High Dependency
Unit and the Northwest Regional Spinal Injuries Unit.
Ormskirk District General Hospital has 7 Major Theatres, a paediatric Accident &
Emergency Department, Delivery Suite, Maternity Theatre and a diagnostic Treatment
Centre
Other Services provided: Acute Pain Service, Pain Medicine Clinics, Spinal Injuries,
Community Dental Anaesthesia, Epidural Service for Maternity, Pre-admission

Education and Training
The appointee is expected to take responsibility for his/her own continuing
professional development, as outlined in Good Medical Practice. They will be
encouraged and supported to consolidate and develop their existing medical
knowledge, as well as their technical, non-technical skills and professional
capabilities. Opportunities are available in areas such as clinical education,
simulation, audit and quality improvement, as well as research.
The anaesthetic department has a weekly educational programme, in situ simulation
sessions in maternity and critical care, as well as monthly audit and morbidity and
mortality meetings, all of which are available to the appointee.
There is a Clinical Education Centre on both hospital sites with library and study
facilities. Study leave will be provided to support the appointee’s professional
development, aligned to their educational and training needs, in line with trust policy
for career grade doctors (pro-rata for shorter periods of employment).
Requirements of the post
The appointee must be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise. They
should have successfully completed or expect to complete the UK Foundation
Programme by the time of the appointment. Alternatively, they should be able to
demonstrate foundation programme competency outcomes. Previous clinical training
and/or experience of working in anaesthesia or critical care is desirable but not
essential.
The appointee is required to work according to a resident full-shift duty rota, including
out-of-hours working, such that 7 nights, and at least one weekend of days will be
worked within an 8-week period.

Codes of Conduct.
3. It is a requirement of employment within Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust

identifiable information. The Data Protection Act 1998 safeguards the handling of
information held in both electronic and manual filing systems and it is the duty of
all staff employed by the trust to uphold the principles of the Act.
Any employee disclosing confidential/patient records or information to any
unauthorised person or persons will render the employee subject to disciplinary
action.
4. The Freedom of Information Act 2000 requires all public organisations to provide
any member of the public, upon receipt of a written request, with the information
they require, subject to certain exemptions. Every member of staff employed by
the Trust must take responsibility for any request for information that they receive
and respond in line with Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust’s Freedom of
Information Policy and guidance.
5. All employees are required by Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act
(1974) to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others
who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

7. To ensure compliance with all Trust Risk Management, Research Governance
and Infection Control Policies and Procedures and abide by the Essential
Standards of quality and safety.
8. Undertake appropriate Induction and Mandatory training, including infection
control and comply with all Trust Infection Control policies relevant to the post,
particularly with regard to the hand hygiene policy. To remind and challenge
colleagues of their Infection Prevention and Control responsibilities if there is a
potential or actual breach of policy.
9. It is incumbent on the post holder to continually update his/her professional
awareness and carry out other duties deemed appropriate to the grade of the
post.
