Social Welfare Policy

Social welfare policy is the government program set to improve the quality of life
and well-being of citizens. It provides a safety net for people who are facing
challenges, such as poverty, unemployment, bad health, or social marginalization.
The policy will ensure social inequalities are addressed by providing access to
basic services like health care, education, housing, and income support.

The Directive Principles of State Policy form one of the provisions in the Indian
Constitution, which provides guidelines to the government in making laws as well
as policies for the social and economic welfare of the country. These are
incorporated into the Indian Constitution under Articles 36–51 of Part IV.

The major social welfare schemes in India come under this Act, MGNREGA,
which guarantees 100 days of wage work to the rural households. It provides
income support and goes one step further by pushing the rural infrastructure
development work. The Public Distribution System ensures food security for rice,
wheat, and sugar well within the reach of low-income families at subsidized prices.
The Midday Meal Scheme aims to provide better nutrition to children and improve
school attendance through the provision of free meals to school-going children.
In the health sector, the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
(PM-JAY) will provide health insurance coverage for economically vulnerable
people, ensuring quality treatment not exceeding financial hardship. For education,
programs like the Right to Education Act (RTE) provide free and compulsory
education for children in the age group of 6 to 14.

These social welfare policies also help identify the specific groups that are the
Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, along with
women, children, the aged population, and people with disabilities. Subsequent to
this identification, these communities are provided scholarships, vocational
training, housing schemes, etc., pension programs, and anti-discrimination laws.

In the recent past, tech tools and e-gov practices have made the process of giving
help more efficient. The Direct Benefit Transfer system lets subsidies and
monetary support goes straight into the bank accounts of beneficiaries; this way,
leakage and corruption will be reduced. Aadhaar, a biometic-based unique ID
system, has made it easier to spot beneficiaries and deliver services.
