Watch Alarm System
Operating Instruction

4 Watch Alarm
The watch alarm system can be switched ON and OFF by means of a lockable
switch. The OFF state does not begin until 1 minute after the lockable switch is set
to OFF. During this time, a different time setting and different cabins can be
selected. If all cabins are deselected here, the 1st cabin (master) is activated when
switching ON occurs. It is possible by parameter to blocked the 1st cabin (master
couldn’t deactivated). In the OFF state, all displays are dark and any activated
alarm outputs are reset. The system monitoring function and thus the system fault
output (X1.10-11) are active even in the OFF state.

When the unit is switched on by means of the lockable switch, all operating
elements are illuminated from behind, the preselected time is displayed (green LED
in the time key) and the green LED of the selected cabin flashes. If the selection
is accepted on the cabin panel by means of the acknowledgement key, the green
LED changes over to continuous illumination. If the alarm reset is not performed
on the unit within the selected time ( t-30 sec.) by operation of a key (and then
releasing of the key again), or by operation of other connected units (e.g. BAS40P)
or with one of the external acknowledgement-keys, then a preliminary alarm is
given by flashing of the lamps in all connected acknowledgement keys and the time
LED on the WAS40P. After a further 5 seconds have passed without
acknowledgement, then the internal buzzer, the red LED 9 and the external
buzzers in the reset panels are activated. If the system is not reset with one of the
acknowledgement keys, then the subsequent alarm processes occur in the
following steps. 25 seconds after the buzzers, the collective alarm (X1.12-13), as
well as the buzzers and the alarm LED's in the selected cabin panels, are
activated. The alarm cannot be reset on the cabin panels. After a further 30
seconds, the general alarm (X1.14-15) follows.
Via the input X2.21, the watch alarm can be triggered immediately, i.e. the
collective alarm and the selected cabin-alarms occur immediately. The general
alarm follows after 30 seconds unless resetting (acknowledgement) takes place
before that.
The times above are used if time program 1 are selected.

5 Officer’s Call
The officer's call system of the WAS40P is active in the ON state only. By
operation of the relevant key, a call can be sent to all cabins or to a particular one.
On the WAS40P, the red LED of the called cabin flashes, and on the cabin panel
the alarm LED and the buzzer are activated intermittently until an
acknowledgement takes place on the cabin panel or the call is withdrawn by
operation of the call key again.

6 External Alarm
An external alarm that is present at X2.20 is signalled by the red flashing LED 18.
After 5 second the internal buzzer are activated. If this alarm is not acknowledged
within a further 25 seconds by means of the key K18, it is passed on to the
selected officer, and the collected alarm (X1.12-13) is output. The general alarm
(X1.14-15) follows after a further 30 seconds. If the alarm is acknowledged, it is
displayed by continuous illumination for as long as it is present. If this alarm comes
from a BAS40P, the acknowledgement key (K18) acoustically acknowledges the
alarm there too.
The delay times are the same as the times at the watch alarm function.

7 WAS Disabled
If a voltage of +24 V is applied to the input X1.8, the system is disabled. In this
mode, the outputs for the reset panels and cabin panels, the general alarm and the
collective alarm are not active. The visual display goes off, and only the
background illumination continues to run, but at the lowest dimming level. The only
operating element that is active is the lockable switch (the unit can be switched off).

8 Dimming / Lamp Test

The dimming level is adjusted by means of two dimming keys. Three dimming
levels can be selected. Each of these dimming levels can be set in 16 steps via
parameters. Dimming can also take place via a BAS40M connected to the Syn-IO
line (X1.8).

The lamp test is activated for 3 seconds by operation of the two dimming keys. In
the lamp test, all red and green corner-LED's and the entire background
illumination light up. Because the red and green corner-LED's light up, they appear
yellow.

9 Lockable Switch OFF

The position of the lockable switch is output on X1.18 (OFF = 24V). This signal
could use for the input ‘harbour mode’ on the bridge alarm system.

10 Appendix Operation with Automatic Mode Selector Switch

Recommend by the IMO Regulation MSC.128(75) the Bridge Navigational Watch
Alarm System should be operational whenever the ship’s heading or track control
system is engaged, unless inhibited by the master.

Following operational modes are required:

Manual OFF (Does not operate under any circumstances)

Manual ON (In operation constantly)

AUTOMATIC (Automatically brought into operation when ever the ship’s heading
or track control system is activated)

For fulfilment of this requirement the function of the WAP has to be extended with
an Automatic Mode Selector Switch.
The Automatic Mode Selector Switch is also key operated (the same key as for the
ON/OFF switch of the WAP is used).

Principle of operation - Watch Alarm Panel with Automatic Mode

Selector Switch:

Master ON/OFF switch is the key operated switch at the WAP.

If this is OFF the system is off.

If this is ON the operation is dependent on the Automatic Mode Selector Switch:

If the AMS switch is open, the WAP is always ON. (Standard Mode)

If the AMS switch is closed, the WAP is ON only when autopilot is selected.
(Auto Mode)
