Laboratory Practice #2

Task #1: Draw the neat sketches of the following geological features and label them properly.

1. Outcrop
2. Intrusions, flows and masses
3. Dip and strike
4. Parts of a fold
5. Anticline and syncline
6. Fault terminology
7. Normal fault
8. Reverse fault

Details and description of the above will be explained during the lecture sessions. The A-4 size
drawing sheets will be available in the laboratory; however, you have to bring your own pencils,
ruler, eraser. etc. At the end of the laboratory session, the sheets will be collected by the lecturer
for the assessment.

For tasks 2 to 4, the A-3 size drawing sheets will be available in the laboratory; however, you
have to bring your own drawing instruments, including compass, set squares, protractor,
pencils, scale ruler and eraser. At the end of the laboratory session, the sheets will be collected
by the lecturer for the assessment.

Task #2: The apparent dips were recorded in a sandstone quarry as 1:5 due S20°E and 1:11 due
N60°E. Determine the direction and amount of true dip.

Task #3: A bedded formation possesses an apparent dip of 1:10 due N20°W. The direction of true
strike is N40°W - S40°E. Determine the direction and amount of true dip.

Task #4: A formation has a true dip of 1:5 due East. Determine the amount of apparent dip due
N50°E. Also determine the direction along which the amount of apparent dip will be 1:10.

The following should be noted:

1. Follow the related lecture and laboratory materials as provided at the Canvas unit site.
2. At the end of the written laboratory group report, each student in the group should clearly
describe his/her individual contribution to the group report.
3. The learning based on the group reports for all three laboratory sessions for each student
will be assessed individually through related short questions of varying challenges, as
detailed at the Canvas unit site.
4. The group report should be prepared without any technical and presentation
weaknesses/errors, and lack of essential information based on the defined laboratory task.
5. For each technical weakness/error/lack of content as noticed, there will be a deduction of
0.5 marks, and for each presentation weakness/error (typo, poor quality of figure/labels,
grammatical error, missing/incorrect unit, referencing, etc.), there will be a mark deduction
of 0.25.
