attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are
more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19

- Context clues can help you figure out the meaning of a word or phrase
you don't know. Context clues are the words and sentences that surround a
word and help explain the word's meaning. Context clues are important
because their comprehension and effective usage leads to academic
success. They can increase your vocabulary, reading comprehension, and
make you better readers.

You may follow a series of steps when you come across a word or
phrase you do not know.
1. Reread and read ahead. Pause and reread the words that come before
and after the difficult word.
2. Identify the context clues Analyze the meaning of the words in the text
that surround the unfamiliar word.
3. Decide on a meaning Use what you understand from the context and
make an educated guess about the meaning of the unfamiliar word.
4. Check that meaning you come up with. The meaning you have decided
on should make sense and it should give the thought of the sentence.

There are four types of context clues.

1. Synonym Clue- Other words with the same meaning are used in the
sentence.
Ex: I find my best friend, amiable, especially when she acted friendly to
our new classmate.
2. Antonym Clue- A word with opposite meaning is used in the sentence.
Filipino people are amiable in nature but because of physical distancing,
they seemingly have become anti-social.
3. Explanation/Definition Clue-the meaning of the word is explained in the
sentence.
Ex: Filipinos are known to be amiable. We always smile, greet others and
Avoid conflict.
4. Example-an example of the word is in the sentence or nearby
sentences.
Ex: Frontliners have shown how amiable they are. They are kind, caring
and approachable.
Based on how the word “amiable” is used in the sentences above, were you
able to understand its meaning? How would you define the word?
