INTRODUCTION

Marblo® is available with differing formulations ranging from advanced chemical, stain and fire
resistant series as required in industrial laboratories, to special decorative series suited to an
extremely broad range of applications and a multitude of aesthetic effects.

Our range of solid surface sheet materials can be fabricated to form even the most complex 3-
dimensional shapes by authorised Marblo® fabricators, using conventional woodwork tools and
machinery. In the event of long term wear or mishap, the materials usually can be refurbished to
look like a new installation where other materials may need replacement. Marblo® colour matched
joint adhesive, provides not only for seamless joints, but also has hygienic benefits for food
preparation and laboratory applications. Marblo® joints are not heat welded, but are formed using a
liquid form of the same Marblo® colour to achieve the best possible joint match.

The Marblo® range of pre-finished decorative sheets known as the Nature Collection affords the
ability to be cut and installed by a competent tradesperson, delivering the most economical solution
to supply feature panels in residential and commercial projects alike.

All Marblo® materials share in the company’s commitment to innovation and quality manufacturing.

13
SPECIFICATION CONSIDERATIONS

During the specification process for Marblo materials, the following should be considered.

“Green Star” Rating

Marblo® materials have been used on numerous “5 Green Star” rated projects due to its long
product life and low manufacturing emissions. Please refer to “Commitment to the Environment”
statement in the PDF downloads section of www.marblo.com.au

Interior Use Only

All Marblo materials are intended for INTERIOR USE ONLY, direct sunlight may eventually cause
fading, yellowing or possible distortion of the material in excessive heat conditions.
In some applications, light solid colours have been used for exterior applications. Before
specification, refer to the Marblo® Fabrication Manual or contact your local Marblo® office.

Sample Colours
Due to varying levels of translucency and material thickness that are available, it is critical when
selecting colours that you obtain a sample of the nominated Marblo® material.
It should be noted that, dark and more highly saturated colours may require greater maintenance
depending on the application. Please also allow for the fact that production may differ from sample
due to batching. Large installations of materials may also show a different hue due to factors such
as lighting in the installed environment.

Surface Finish
Marblo® Accredited Fabricators will produce materials in the “Recommended Surface Finish”
detailed herein UNLESS an alternate surface finish is nominated.

Substructure
All Marblo® materials require adequate structural supports in the form of a full substrate or
perimeter support made from HMR or equivalent materials. When bonding or affixing Marblo
materials, flexible adhesives should be used.
Refer to Marblo® Fabrication Manual or contact your local Marblo® office for specific advice.

Paint to Back of Translucent Sheets

When translucent materials are to be affixed to joinery or other surfaces, it is recommended to
paint the rear of the Marblo® sheet with white acrylic paint or resin to stop the substructure and
glue from showing through.

Thermal Expansion
The linear thermal expansion for 12mm thick Marblo solid colour range, is +/-1mm per metre at +/-
20ºC. A minimum of 3mm at each end should be allowed between the Marblo material and walls or
other rigid ends. If a bench top run exceeds 3 lineal meters a further 1mm should be allowed for
every additional meter. If expansion gaps are required to be filled, only a flexible silicone should be
used. Adequate clearance must be allowed for any fixtures such as plumbing that protrude through
the material and never screw directly into Marblo® materials.

Edge Profiles
To reduce the occurrence of chipping, ALL exposed edges or Marblo® materials should be radiused.
Minimum 3mm radius is recommended with 5mm radius or greater to be used for applications such
as movable tabletops. Square edges and arrissed edges should be avoided.

Internal Corners
All internal corners should have a minimum 6mm radius. For cook-top cutouts, the largest radius
possible that can be achieved but no less than 12.5mm radius is recommended.
Refer to Marblo® Fabrication Manual or contact your local Marblo® office for specific advice.

14
Translucent Materials
(Opal, Pearl, Opal FR & Nature Collection)

 Surface Finish (Lustre)

If the required lustre is different to the recommended surface finish provided on Marblo®
samples, obtain a production sample in the nominated luster finish before materials are
ordered.
Changing the Opal finish from satin to high gloss for example, may result in the base colour
appearing darker and more vibrant, it may also provider greater levels of translucency.

 Thickness of Material
The greater the thickness the darker the colour may appear (lower light transfer). Reduced light
transfer may occur and additional lighting may be required (where the products are to be back-
lit).

 Level of Translucency
Less translucent materials may give the base colour a darker appearance (lower light transfer).
More translucent materials may give the base colour a lighter appearance (greater light
transfer).
Less translucent materials such as NOL3, Opal FR (OFR) and Fire Rated Translucent (FR) will
result in reduced light transfer, additional lighting may be required (where the products are to
be back-lit).

 Backlighting
When backlighting Marblo, consideration should be given to the following:
• The intensity of the light source to be used.
• Allowance for circulatory airflow to prevent build up of excessive heat.
• Suitable service access to the light fitting.
• Distance from light source
• Light “hot spotting”
• Shadows caused by supports and framing.
Your local Marblo® office can assist with general advice and suggestions regarding backlighting
of Marblo® materials and provide examples of various specifications employed in previous
projects.

 Joint Position
Due to the nature of translucent materials, joints — even seamless joints — will be noticeable
and in many cases obvious.
Nominating joint positions and even featuring of joints must be considered when specifying
these ranges of materials.
Please refer to Marblo® Fabrication Manual or contact your local Marblo® office for specific
advice.

 Site Access
Although Marblo® Opal and Pearl Series materials are available in large sheet sizes of up to
3500mm long, restriction of access at the installation site (due to lift heights, corridors and stair
wells) may require site joints which may be visible or may require featuring.

 UV Stable Silicone
Only UV stable silicones should be used to affix and or bond translucent Marblo® materials.
