SCATS Construction Housekeeping Procedure
Purpose
The purpose of this Housekeeping Procedure is to establish clear guidelines for maintaining a safe,
clean, and organized work environment at all SCATS Construction job sites. Effective housekeeping
practices are essential for preventing accidents, injuries, and damage to equipment while ensuring
compliance with regulatory requirements.
Scope
This procedure applies to all SCATS Construction employees, subcontractors, and visitors at all active
construction sites. It covers the general principles and specific responsibilities for maintaining clean
and organized workspaces during the course of construction activities.
Responsibilities
Site Supervisors: Ensure that housekeeping is performed regularly and consistently. Inspect work
areas at the beginning and end of each workday.
Employees: Maintain a clean work area, dispose of waste materials properly, and report any
housekeeping issues to the Site Supervisor.
Subcontractors: Follow SCATS Construction housekeeping standards as part of their work scope and
report any concerns to the Site Supervisor.
Safety Officer: Regularly monitor housekeeping practices and provide recommendations for
improvement.
Housekeeping Practices and Guidelines
1. General Work Area Cleanliness
Tools and Equipment: All tools and equipment must be stored in designated areas when not in use
to avoid clutter and trip hazards. Ensure tools are properly maintained and cleaned.
Walkways and Access Routes: Ensure that all walkways, aisles, and emergency exits are kept clear of
materials, tools, and debris at all times. These paths must remain unobstructed to allow safe
movement of workers and emergency responders.
Waste Disposal: All waste materials, including scrap metal, wood, plastic, paper, and packaging,
must be disposed of properly. Provide appropriate waste containers for different types of waste
(e.g., hazardous waste, recyclables, general waste).
Daily Cleanup: Each worker is responsible for cleaning their own work area at the end of the day.
Supervisors will conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance with housekeeping standards.
2. Material Storage
Proper Storage: Materials must be stored in designated areas. Heavy materials should be stacked
securely to prevent shifting, while lightweight materials should be stored off the ground to avoid
contamination or damage.
Labeling: All stored materials, especially chemicals or hazardous substances, must be clearly labeled
with the appropriate information, including product names and safety instructions.
3. Hazardous Waste and Spills
Hazardous Materials: Ensure that hazardous substances (e.g., paints, solvents, adhesives, oils) are
handled, stored, and disposed of in accordance with safety data sheets (SDS) and environmental
regulations.
Spill Cleanup: In case of a spill, employees must follow the site’s spill response protocol. Keep spill
kits accessible in areas where hazardous materials are used or stored.
4. Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily Inspections: Site Supervisors should conduct daily walkthroughs to identify any housekeeping
issues, such as debris accumulation, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions.
Cleaning Equipment: Ensure that cleaning equipment (e.g., brooms, vacuums, pressure washers) is in
good working condition and readily available.
Regular Deep Clean: Schedule weekly or monthly deep cleaning tasks, such as power washing
exterior surfaces, clearing out storage containers, and cleaning high-traffic areas like stairways and
scaffolding.
5. Temporary Structures and Facilities
Restrooms and Break Areas: Ensure that portable toilets, washing stations, and break areas are kept
clean and stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., toilet paper, soap, paper towels).
Offices and Meeting Areas: Keep onsite office spaces and meeting areas organized, clean, and free
from excess paperwork, trash, or unused items.
6. Safety and Reporting
Housekeeping Audits: The Safety Officer or Site Supervisor will conduct regular housekeeping audits.
Results will be shared with all site personnel, and corrective actions will be taken as needed.
Incident Reporting: Any housekeeping-related incidents, such as slips, trips, or falls, must be
reported immediately through the company’s incident reporting system.
Procedure for Managing Housekeeping
Daily Responsibilities
Each employee will clean their own work area at the end of the shift.
Supervisors will ensure that common areas (e.g., walkways, stairways, storage areas) are regularly
cleaned and maintained.
Weekly Responsibilities
Supervisors will conduct a more thorough review of the site to identify any areas requiring major
cleanup.
Large or hazardous waste will be removed by designated personnel or subcontractors specializing in
hazardous materials removal.
Monthly Responsibilities
Site Supervisors will ensure that a comprehensive review of all housekeeping procedures is
conducted. Corrective actions will be implemented based on audit findings.
