i. Worrying news

0. The day started just fine. I woke up at 7 at the bee p of the alarm on my mobile, stumbled to the
bathroom and took a shower. Then, while I was having breakfast – a coffee with a toast and an
orange juice – I read the online press and the messages in my email inbox. One of them was from
my boss, summoning me to an important meeting that afternoon at five.
25. There was when the day began to go downhill. I had already made an appointment with Karen at
half past five. She had been insisting on showing me around her new flat and after many
unsuccessful attempts, we had finally both been able to find a window in our agendas, and now
this. I knew Karen would be upset but, what could I do? I decided to send her a message.
26. ‘Hi Karen’, I wrote, ‘sorry I can’t make it for today. My boss has arranged a meeting at five, and
apparently it is important – or so he says… I wish I could just skip the meeting, but he’s not the
kind of person who takes no as an answer, and he’s not the most sympathetic person in the world,
either. We’ve already had some mismatches – you know I don’t find it easy not to speak my mind
– and the last thing I want is to make him any angrier. So, can we just put our appointment off?’
27. At the office, I had some daunting tasks that needed being dealt with, including the completion of
the quarterly sales report. I also had a stack of files to revise and a printer that was out of order
since Friday. The technician was supposed to have come two days ago, but apparently, he had
better things to do, or else Tom from maintenance had just ignored my request. To make matters
worse, when I switched on the computer, the automatic system upgrade activated, so I could not
use it. I decided to deal with paperwork instead.
28. Soon I was engrossed in it, completely unaware of anything going on around me. It was then when
Helen turned up. I was taken aback by this sudden interruption. She apologised and told me that
she and other peers were organising a farewell party for Tom, from Human Resources, who was
retiring at the end of that month. She wanted me to contribute with 30€ for a present.
29. I hardly knew Tom, so I reluctantly gave her the money, or better said, agreed to give it to her the
following day because, at that moment, I just had some pocket money on me. Then, out of the
blue, she dropped the bomb. She had accidentally overheard a conversation between her boss and
mine. Apparently, the company was undergoing financial problems and they were planning to
make some people redundant, and my name was mentioned in the conversation. My heart just
skipped a beat.
30. I didn’t understand why she was telling me this. I suppose she just wanted to warn me, but I found
it was rather indiscreet from her to listen to private conversations, and I wondered whether her
‘warning’ had an ulterior motive – she had a grudge against me since I had been promoted.
Nevertheless, I thanked her for the information and resumed work, trying not to think again about
the possibility of being fired.
31. However, I couldn’t keep my mind out of what my workmate had said. At five, I shuffled towards
the meeting room expecting the worst. But the meeting progressed as normal and only once it was
over and everybody had left, my boss approached me and asked whether I had any complaint
about him. He said he held me in high esteem and was sorry to hear the feeling was not mutual,
and then he showed me a printout of the email I had sent to my friend Karen. Or so I thought
because as it turned out to be, I had sent it to him! I blushed and apologised, but since then my
boss has been watching me closely, and I can’t blame him. Now, I always check my emails twice
to make sure I am sending them to the right receiver!
