Eutrophication

The document illustrates the process of eutrophication caused by excessive fertilizer use, leading to harmful algal blooms that deplete oxygen in aquatic environments. As algae thrive on nutrients, they block sunlight for other plants, which die and become food for bacteria, further exacerbating oxygen depletion. The narrative serves as a cautionary tale against irresponsible farming practices, embodied by the character Bart, who remains oblivious to the environmental consequences of his actions.

EUTROPHICATION

phosphates!
yummy!
Meet Bart.
Bart is a farmer.
Bart wants a high yield of crops so he
can get rich and pursue his life-long
passion: professional sleeping
To do this, Bart sprays fertiliser NO3-

NO3-
aggressively all over his plants, going a bit NO3-

bonkers, while doing so... (he really wants

those big bucks)
Unfortunately, the crops can no longer deal with Bart’s
abusive and sadistic behaviour, so their only option is to cry
their eyes out. (very hana behaviour ngl)

Their tears are salty (literally)

The salty tears (of fertiliser) decide that they are done with
this maltreatment and finally gain the confidence and strength
to runoff (like loma’s ammonia).
The fertiliser tears then end up near a
lake at the end of their journey.
Unfortunately, they just cannot seem
NO3-
to put an end to their exploitation as
NO3-
they encounter some hungry algae..
NO3-

ooooooo... nitrate 😍
😍😍
The hungry algae just couldn’t resist..
we’re so screwed.. they caught a whiff of those
fertilisers, and next thing you know,
its an all-you-can-eat buffet!

yummyyyyyyyy

NO3-
NO3- NO3-
After eating all that fertiliser, the algae
😔
grow like crazy. (i can’t relate )
woahh! i’m a
big boy!

NO3-
NO3- NO3-

NO3-

NO3-
After that, the algae becomes selfish (bc its
ego also grew) and decides to only hog all the
sunlight for themselves.
MY
SUNLIGHT.
(Algal bloom)

NO3-
Because the aquatic plants have now been
stripped of light in their lives, they must face
their inevitable fate of darkness (i.e. death)

i can’t photosynthesise :(((( NO3-

They say ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’.
Well, in this case, the dead aquatic plants are the
ultimate treasure for bacteria, who thrive off of this
supposed ‘trash’.

MUAHAHAHAHAHA...
i spot breakfast!! JACKPOT!!
While the bacteria eat (decompose) their yummy
breakfasts, they also have a delectable dessert:
oxygen!

Yo! Pass me that O2!

The bacteria, being the conceited monsters they are, just
flea after their breakfast, leaving behind nothing but chaos
(anoxic water) in their wake.

Bye Felicia!
As a result of the self-indulgent behaviours of the bacteria,
the fish and other aquatic organisms must now face the
consequences of living without their one true love: oxygen.

Help! We’re gasping

for breath! (quite
literally)
Unfortunately, the fish’s love towards oxygen proves to be
impeccably strong, to the extent that they cannot survive
without its presence. (i.e. they cannot respire)

O2.. i will always... love

you
Now, back to Bart.
Bart is sound asleep..
(prepping for his billionaire
days) with no care in the
world for what his need for
sleep has done to the fishes
and plants.

DON’T BE A BART.
