CONCORD
Concord means Subject – Verb agreement
Rule 1: The verb and subject must agree in number
e.g. if subject is singular, verb is singular – she writes in her diary
If subject is plural, verb is plural – they write in their diary
Rule 2: be careful when there are words/phrases in between subject and verb.
e.g. One of the criminals is/are guilty.
Rule 3: when subjects are joined by ‘and’ the verb is plural
e.g. The brother and sister are returning from school.
Rule 4: when subjects are joined by either/or, neither/nor, then verb is according to
second subject
e.g. Either he or his brothers is/are walking slowly.
Rule 5: when subjects are joined by ‘along with’ the verb is according to the first
subject
e.g. He along with his parents was going to the club.
They along with him were going to the club.
Rule 6: in sentences with sums of money, distances, periods of time are used as a
unit, the verb is singular
e.g. 500 rupees is a small amount.
The minimum retirement age is 65 years.
10 kilometres walk is too good for weight loss.
Rule 7: when we have words like ‘a lot of’, ‘all of’, ‘some of’, note the noun after ‘of’,
if singular verb is singular, if plural verb is plural
e.g. All of the cake is finished/ Some of the cake is finished/A lot of cake is finished.
All of the cakes are finished/ Some of the cakes are finished/A lot of cakes are
finished.
Rule 8: Nouns such as ‘Mathematics’, ‘English’, ‘news’ etc. are singular and use
singular verbs.
e.g. English is not easy to pass. The news is alarming.
Rule 9: in sentences with a wish we use ‘were’ and not ‘was’
e.g. I wish we were able to take offline classes.
Rule 10: when subjects are joined with ‘as well as’ the verb is according to the first
subject.
e.g. They as well as their child were present in the auditorium.
She as well as her sisters is playing with her dolls.
