CHAPTER :- COMPUTER HARDWARE & SOFTWARH
COMPUTER HARDWARE : The.electrical, electronics, magnetic, electro-magnetic part of computer is
known as computer hardware. Computer hardware is touchable and visible. Without lrardware, corl"rputeir

SOME OTHER HARDWARE PARTS

UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supplier): - This UPS supplies power to computer against the power failure.
PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICE
PRIMARY STORAGE: - Primary memory or main memory stores the necessary prograrns in system
software, which are required to execute user programs. The main memory is of two types. They are:
(a) RAM (RANDOM AccEsS MEMORY)
(b) RoM (READ ONLY MEMORY)
RAM (RANDOM ACCESS MEMORil: . RAM is a read / write memory. lnformation can be written into or
read from a RAM. lt is a volatile memory. lt retains the stored information as long as it is supplied with power,
When power supply is switched off or interrupted the stored information in the RAM is lost.
' BOM (READ ONLY.MEMORY) :- ROM is one in which information is perrnanently stored. The informatioir
from tfre memory can only be read and it is not possible to write fresh information into it. When the power
supply is switched off, the information stored inside a ROM is not lost. Such memories are also known as
field stores, permanent stores or dead stores.
SECONDARY STORAGH DEVICE
Though the main memory is very fast, but it is very expensive. On the other hand, the storage capacity of
main memory is very low. So an additional memory is required. This type of additional memory is known as
SECONDARY STORAGE. Hard disk, compact disk (CD) or optical disk, floppy disk and pen drive are
examples of secondary storage device.
TYPES OF SOFTWARF
Computer software is normally classified into two broad categories, they are:
1. APPLICATION SOFTWARE.
2. SYSTEMEOFTWARE.
1. APPLICATION SOFTWARE is a set of one or more programs designed to cairy out operations for a
specified application. AutoCAD, FACT, TALLY, ACE, NEXT GENERATION, MS WORD, MS EXCEL
etc. are examples of application software.
2. QYSTEU_$pETWABE is a set of one or i-nore programs designed to conirol ihe operatior c;f a
compuier system. They are general programs written to assist humans in tl-re use of ihe colipr, rir:r
system, System package supports the running of other software; conintunicate wilh pciiti'+rrl
devices; support the development of other types of software; and monitor ttre use of various l-rarclware
resources. MS DOS, MS WINDOWS, LINUX etc. are examples of system software.
CHAPTERI - MEMORY MEASUREMEN-T
Computer understands only the binary number system. The binary number system consists only two
digits, they are, 0 & 1. These 0 & 1 are known as binary digits, in short bit.
