Chapter 1
Chess pieces names and
values
This page provides the details of chess pieces, names of chess pieces, value
of chess pieces and photo of chess pieces. These will help the beginners to
learn the names of chess pieces easily.
Chess pieces resembles tall columns with a wide base. See photo of chess
pieces. The shape of the pieces tapers from bottom to top. The top portion
of the chess pieces are stylished to represent each piece nature.
1.1 Colour of chess pieces
There are primarily two colour of pieces exist. They are
• White
• Black
1.2 Number of chess pieces
Each player has 16 pieces. The pieces of chess for one player are
1. King - 1 No
2. Queen - 1 No
3. Rook - 2 Nos
4. Knight - 2 Nos
5. Bishop - 2 Nos
6. Pawn - 8 Nos

1.3 Pieces
1.3.1 King
Each player get only one king. King is the tallest among the pieces. It
has a crown on its top with a cross. See photo of king. King is the most
important and the weakest piece. You have to protect your king from
enemies attack.

1.3.2 Queen
Queen is slightly shorter than the king and has a small crown at the top
with a tiny ball. See photo of queen. Each player has one queen. Queen
is the most powerful piece, as it combines the movement of a Rook and a
Bishop.

1.3.3 Bishop
Bishop is usually third in the order based on height. It has a a hat like
top portion that represents mitre and it stands next to King and Queen.
See photo of bishop. Each player has two bishops. Bishop is weaker than
the rook.

1.3.4 Knight
The knight has a S shaped head on top. See photo of knight. Each player
has two knights. Knights and bishops are normally considered equal.

1.3.5 Rook
The shape of the top portion of rook loosely represents a castle turret .
The rook is also called a castle. See photo of rook. Each player has two
rooks. Rooks are stronger than the knights or bishops.

1.3.6 Pawn
Each player has eight pawns, see photo of pawn . They form the first line
of defense. It is also the second most weakest among the pieces . The
pawn is the shortest among the chess pieces and has a ball on its top.

1.4 Value of chess pieces
The common standard values of chess pieces are
• King - invaluable
• Queen - 9
• Rook - 5
• Bishop - 3
• Knight - 3
• Pawn -1

As the game reaches the end game stage, the value of the chess pieces may
vary based on the status of the chess board.
