Text 3: The Water Cycle

Water is very important for life on Earth. It moves through a natural process called the
water cycle. This cycle has four main stages: evaporation, condensation, precipitation,
and collection.

The first stage is evaporation. When the Sun heats water in rivers, lakes, and oceans, the
water turns into water vapour and rises into the air. This happens because heat changes
liquid water into a gas.

The second stage is condensation. When the water vapour rises, it cools down and turns back
into tiny droplets of water. These droplets come together to form clouds.

The third stage is precipitation. When the clouds become too heavy with water droplets, the
water falls back to the Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. This is called precipitation.

The fourth stage is collection. After precipitation, the water goes back into rivers, lakes,
oceans, or into the ground. This water can be used again, starting the cycle over.

The water cycle is a continuous process. It never stops. The Sun is the main source of
energy that powers the water cycle. Without the Sun, the water cycle would not work.

The water cycle helps keep the Earth’s climate stable. It moves water to where it is needed
and helps plants grow. People, animals, and plants all depend on the water cycle to survive.
