Read the following passage about overfishing and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 6 to 15.
Historically, people have mistakenly thought of the ocean as a diverse and limitless source of food.
Today, however, mainly due to overfishing, 90 percent of the large fish in our oceans have disappeared.
How did this happen, and what does the future hold?
In the past, local fishermen caught only enough fish to feed their families and communities. They used
traditional gear like spears and hooks that targeted a single fish at a time. However, in the mid-20th century,
there was increasing demand for fish as a healthy protein source. [I] In response to this, governments
worldwide gave money and other support to the fishing industry. [II] As a result, large commercial fishing
companies emerged, catching and selling enormous amounts of fish for profit. [III] They adopted new
technologies, including sonar to locate fish and massive nets that dragged along the ocean floor. [IV]
However, this rapid expansion came at a cost. Commercial fishing has greatly reduced the populations
of large fish such as cod, tuna, and salmon. Meanwhile, because there aren’t enough big fish to eat them,
small fish such as sardines and anchovies have more than doubled in number. This is a problem because,
to maintain a stable ocean ecosystem, predators are needed to remove sick and weak fish. Without them,
too many unhealthy small fish remain in the sea. This can cause serious problems for the ocean’s food chain
and overall health.
Scientists suggest a few ways we can restore the ocean’s biodiversity. First, commercial fishing
companies need to catch fewer large fish to allow predator fish populations to recover. Another way to
improve ocean biodiversity is to develop aquaculture, or fish farming, which helps meet seafood demand
without harming wild fish stocks. By growing fish in controlled environments, we can lessen the pressure
on marine ecosystems. In addition, we can make responsible choices about what we eat. For example,
consumers should avoid eating endangered fish species—such as bluefin tuna—and choose fish from
sustainable farms instead. If we make informed decisions about seafood production and consumption,
we can ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy seafood without exhausting our oceans.

C. Unless we produce and consume fish wisely, our children will face a shortage of fish and polluted
oceans.
D. By making sustainable seafood choices, we can manage human needs alongside the protection of

animals. More countries are experiencing record-high temperatures, and poor people or those with health
problems suffer the most.
High heat and humidity make it difficult for the body to cool down. Overheating can damage organs,
such as the heart and kidneys, and even cause death. Heat stroke, dehydration, and heart or kidney problems
are serious risks. Pregnant women may also have a higher chance of giving birth too early. Even healthy
people can get heat exhaustion, muscle cramps, or heat stroke. Some people who survive heat stroke may
have permanent brain problems.
Climate change is the primary factor for rising temperatures. Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse
gases that trap heat in the air. Cities are even hotter because buildings and roads absorb heat and release it
at night. Less green space makes the problem worse because plants provide shade and cool the air. If
the Earth’s temperature rises by 2°C, more than one-third of the world’s people will face extreme heatwaves
every five years.
To stay safe, people should drink water, stay in cool places, and avoid heavy exercise in hot weather.
But not everyone can afford air conditioning or live in a heat-safe home. Governments and businesses must
act quickly to curb heat-trapping gas emissions, make cities cooler, and protect the most vulnerable people.
If we do nothing, heatwaves will become more common and dangerous.
