For more than 250 years Hamleys of London has been the finest toy shop in the world bringing magical experiences and joy to children of all
ages. Hamleys rich history began with William Hamley, a Cornishman from Bodmin, England. William Hamley dreamed of the best toy shop
in the world when opening his toy shop at Holborn, London in 1760.

KICKSTARTING THE JOURNEY

William Hamley, a young man who had just returned from the British Army, had a dream to open a finest toy shop. He
started with his ambition by opening a small toy shop named Noah’s Ark.
The shop used to sell wooden toys ,rag dolls, tin soldiers, wooden horses, and hoops.
It quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality products and exceptional customer service among the affluent residents
of the Bloomsbury district.
JOY EMPORIUM
After William’s death in 1886, his
grandsons opened another store
called Joy Emporium whose idea
was to create a space for children
and parents where they experience
the feel of toys and fun rather than
just buying it.

Unfortunately, in 1901, Noah’s Ark


caught fire and the whole store had
to be shutdown but Hamleys was
resilient, relocating to a new
address on the same street. Over
the years, the store went through
several name changes but finally
settled on the iconic name
“Hamleys”.
Expansion and Innovation

Over the years, Hamleys continued to expand its offerings


and innovate in the toy industry. In the 1800s, the company
began importing toys from around the world, becoming one
of the first toy stores in the UK to offer a wide range of
international products. Hamleys also pioneered new toy
categories, including board games and construction sets.

In the early 1900s, Hamleys introduced its famous


Christmas catalog, which became a staple in households
across the UK. The record showcased the season’s latest and
most excellent toy, and children eagerly awaited its arrival
each year. Hamleys also continued to innovate in its store
design, creating a magical atmosphere, unlike any other toy
store.
TOUGH TIMES

Hamleys faced financial challenges in the late 1920s, leading to a


temporary closure in 1931. However, the store was saved by Walter
Lines, who bought it and, along with his brothers William and Arthur,
successfully revived its fortunes.

Hamleys withstood the ravages of World War II, surviving five


bombings of its Regent Street store. Despite the hardships, the
dedicated staff continued to serve loyal customers, including Queen
Elizabeth II, who personally adored Hamleys’ toys as a child.

LARGEST TOY RETAILER

In 1981, Hamleys relocated its flagship store to Nos. 188-196 on Regent Street, expanding its premises into the
world’s largest toy store. Boasting seven floors filled with a wide range of toys, games, magic tricks, and crafts, it
quickly became a prominent tourist attraction in London. Over time, Hamleys expanded its presence worldwide, with
more than 170 stores across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and North America.
NEW HOME
In May 2019, Hamleys entered a new chapter in its storied history when Indian retail giant Reliance Retail acquired the beloved
toy store. This acquisition reinforced Hamleys’ position as a global leader in the toy retail industry.
With Reliance Retail at the helm, Hamleys found a new home in India. With over 100 stores in 36 cities, Hamleys has become a
household name, delighting children and families across the country with its enchanting array of toys along with many other
product category for kids.

The sustainability drives at Hamleys are done through


events all over the globe.
Hamleys sees sustainability as a huge concern being
in the toys industry where most of the toys are made
from non biodegradable materials but rather than
throwing the toys away, Hamleys encourages children
and families to pass on their toys to another children.
This initiative took place at Hamleys, Glassglow with
Lego toys calling it the Lego Swap Event.
According to Hamleys, the swaping and sharing helps
in reducing the carbon footprint

Hamleys intoduced the World’s tallest sustainable christmas


tree at JioWonderlan,2023, made of R|Elan™ GreenGold
fabric and Relwood™. R|Elan™ GreenGold fabric is made from
recycled post-consumer bottles. RelWood™ which is 100%
recyclable and enables us to achieve a wood like finish
without containing any wood particles, ensures that not a
single tree needs to get cut for the making of RelWood™. The
tree is a representation of the plastic waste collected by
Reliance employees as part of the Reliance Foundation’s
Recycle4Life campaign, a ‘Swachhata hi Seva’ initiative.

appealing to both parents and children. The TARGETING immersive in-store experience—marked by live

divided into categories such as soft toys, playful decor—differentiates it from
action figures, arts and crafts, and competitors. This aligns with its brand image of
educational games. Its stores primarily focus on middle to being one of the world’s oldest and largest toy

RATIONALE

The reasons behind choosing Hamleys for my the project are:

The home textile sector in India is on the verge of drastic growth.


There is a relevant market gap for home textile for kids.
Hamleys being a shopping hub for kids missed this category.
My prior work experience in my internship where I was working with home textile
for kids made me choose this product category for Hamleys.

platforms have also played a pivotal role in expanding consumer options and convenience, while

China+1 & ban on Xinjiang cotton - Growth window for India
Many large global retailers have adopted ‘China+1’ strategy to diversify their sourcing and manufacturing operations outside of China
to reduce their dependence on the country. Major home textile consumer markets like the US and EU are gradually shifting their
import preferences to India over China, given their concerns on the use of forced labour in China's Xinjiang region, which led to the
subsequent ban on Xinjiang cotton and cheap labour costs. This move is seen as an advantage for India's textiles industry. T&A imports
by the EU-27/US from China has declined by 20%/30% YoY, respectively, in 9MFY24.

TECHPACK: A tech pack is a collection of documents that designers create to communicate their design to a
manufacturer. It's a blueprint that guides the entire production process and ensures that the final product matches
the designer's vision. A techpack includes: Bill of materials, style sheet, construction sheet, measurement sheet.
