Erds Unit I

The document outlines key terminologies and concepts related to seismic design as per IS 1893: 2016, including design acceleration spectrum, horizontal seismic coefficient, seismic zones of India, and various factors affecting earthquake force calculations. It emphasizes the importance of understanding terms like response reduction factor, design lateral force, and storey drift. The document serves as a guide for comprehending essential seismic design parameters for structures.

UNIT I

1. Go through all terminologies mentioned in 3.1 to 3.29, page no. 2 – 3, IS - 1893: 2016.
2. Design Acceleration Spectrum – Design acceleration spectrum refers to an average
smoothened graph of maximum acceleration as a function of natural frequency or natural period
of oscillation for a specified damping ratio for the expected earthquake excitations at the base of a
single degree of freedom system.
Understand the meaning of the following terms

3. Horizontal seismic coefficient – See cl 6.4.2 cl of IS 1893: 2016

4. Seismic zones of India – See Table 3 of IS 1893: 2016

5. Importance factor – See cl 7.2.3 & Table 8 of IS 1893: 2016

6. Response reduction factor – See cl 7.2.6 & Table 9 of IS 1893: 2016

7. Design lateral force – See cl 7.6.3 of IS 1893: 2016

8. Design imposed loads for Earthquake force calculation – See cl 7.3.1 of IS 1893: 2016.

9. Seismic weight – See cl 7.4.1 of IS 1893: 2016

10. Storey Drift – It is the relative displacement between the floors above and/ or below the
Storey under consideration.
